Sex offender names posted

http://www.omaha.com/article/20100104/NEWS01/100109904

By Martha Stoddard

LINCOLN — The names, addresses and photos of all registered sex offenders went online today after a flurry of court activity failed to block their posting.

The information was posted under a new Nebraska law, which requires that all offenders on the state registry be made public.

Previous state law only made public the names of sex offenders considered at high risk to re-offend.

Authorities notified schools, day care centers and religious and youth organizations of offenders at moderate risk to re-offend.

Sarpy County District Judge David Arterburn cleared the way for the full list to be posted this morning, when he refused to extend a temporary restraining order.

That order had been issued late Thursday, just hours before the names were to go online.

1. Its almost a daily thing in the New Orleans Newspaper
in the classifieds. Sex offenders have to buy an ad with their picture and what they have been convicted of and when the offense occurred and their address.

2. I have said for years that those lists are only valuable when public and when they only contain
people who are dangerous to us. Not everyone convicted of every "sex crime" is dangerous to the public. The more we extend the list to people who don't need to be on it, the less people will pay attention to it.

4. They used to do it in MA but no more. You can get the info from
your local P.D. but it is no longer available on-line.

5. My question still remains, when does paying for a crime end?
Upon death? For the teenager caught in a car necking with his under-aged girlfriend, does he suffer for the rest of his life because we don't know when to stop punishing the poor? That's what this is all about. Punishment of the poor for the rest of their lives because they could not afford the best defense money can buy.

I know, there are LOTS of hard core sex offenders too. But if we're so afraid of them, why not just sentence them to life in prison, or the death penalty? Why don't we do the same thing to shoplifters, thieves, people who get convicted of assault with a deadly weapon, drunks, why not ALL OF THEM.

Society just sucks. Your punishment doesn't end when your fucking 'debt' is paid.

7. A friend of mine works at a residential housing facility for registered offenders
who are also mentally ill or mentally retarded. These men are dangerous. They can have no images of children anywhere in the house, including on the tv. My friend said one day a show came on and a child was in the show. One of the guys in the house was masterbating in front of the tv within minutes. They also had a neighbor kid knock on the door to sell something and the residents were all but knocking each other down to see the kid. He tells us it is really scary how these men are sick and it is practically uncontrollable.

These men need to be on a list that everyone sees. No child should ever knock on that door. Every parent should know who they are and what they look like. They are the boogeymen we were warned about. Some 19 yo with a 16yo girlfriend is not a threat. Even the old perv down the block who wants to get his rocks of with the boys in high school is no threat.

8. When is any one's debt paid, when we deem it paid? The jury?
"Some 19 yo with a 16yo girlfriend is not a threat. Even the old perv down the block who wants to get his rocks of with the boys in high school is no threat. " They are STILL on the list, wearing the scarlet letter. Don't just brush them off because they ARE sex offenders, and their debts will NEVER be paid.

When is their debt paid? And if we don't deem it paid, why then are they shoved out into society to fend for themselves?

13. That is exactly the point I am making in my post.
It is a stupid waste of time and money to make that 19yo register. And, making him register turns the list into some farce that loses its value as a safety feature for people.

Man with horns tattooed on head charged in sex assault
By John Agar | The Grand Rapids Press
January 04, 2010, 4:45PM

CEDAR SPRINGS -- A 19-year-old accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old should pose no identification problems for the prosecution.

The suspect, Jason James Hughes, has horns tattooed on his forehead.

The alleged victim reported the incident in late December, about a week after encountering the suspect. Cedar Springs Police Chief Roger Parent said that the alleged victim knew the identity of the suspect, and that the tattoos did not factor in finding him.

Hughes was charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, and released from the Kent County Jail on $5,000 bond.

12. FWIW, not all sex offenders are child sex offenders.
Not making an argument for or against the registries, just saying that people react to "sex offenders" as if they are all child molesters.
