OAK RIDGE (WATE) -- Federal officials have issued the toughest airport security rules ever for U.S. bound passengers. Random pat-downs, body scans and other new screenings have been ordered.

The new procedures are creating a headache of long lines and concerns about an invasion of privacy for travelers.

But a device being developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory could do away with pat-downs, body scans and long lines.

The machine, an explosive detector, could be the answer to faster and safer airport security.

Two ORNL researchers have been developing it for the past three years.

PIAS is expected to cost $10,000 to $20,000 vs $250,000 for the body scan.

This sounds like a unit that could be put at the gates and check people just before boarding and maybe we could open the concourses back up.
