Severe Unemployment Worsens In Cities
By Hibah Yousuf, staff reporterJanuary 5, 2010: 11:32 AM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The number of U.S. metropolitan areas with jobless rates above 15% increased in November, according to government figures released Tuesday, despite the biggest one-month drop in the national rate in more than three years.

The Labor Department said 17 of 372 metropolitan areas surveyed suffered unemployment rates of at least 15% last month, up from 15 metro areas in October.

National unemployment improved to a seasonally adjusted 10% in November from the 26-year high of 10.2% hit in October. The rate had climbed for 12 out of the previous 13 months before November. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com expect the national rate to edge up to 10.1% when the Labor Department releases its December jobs report Friday.

Three areas in Michigan posted jobless rates higher than 15%, including Detroit. The city wrecked by the collapse of the auto industry continued to lead the nation's areas of 1 million people or more with the highest unemployment rate in November at 15.4%.

California's Inland Empire, including Riverside, San Bernardino and Ontario, ranked second to Detroit among larger areas with an unemployment rate of 14.2% in November.

1. At least in California, the 800 mile high speed rail project is the only real

hope for large scale jobs creation in the foreseeable future, with a lot of funding coming directly from the Stimulus.

As mentioned in the article, Riverside county has been hit so hard in terms of unemployment. In south Riverside & northern San Diego County (also economically devastated), republicans Darrell Issa, Mary Bono, & Brian Billbray are doing all that they can to deny funds to their districts (never stopped them pre-Obama) & pushing hard against the High Speed Rail project through the region.

What is unbelievable is that they are against the HSR stops that are being proposed right smack dab in the middle of their districts. Not only will these rail stops transform these regions into major economic hubs, but they will also bring literally thousands of jobs to their constituents NOW. So, as regions to the north and northwest are gearing up to start working, the unemployed in Riverside & San Diego counties are being denied jobs when they are needed the most.

It's all about politics, their constituents be damned!

What's really rich is that Issa is all over the teevee & Twitter screaming about how the the Stimulus has failed, yet there he his denying the very project that would so dramatically transform his district and the lives of his constituents.

'Effing unreal!

Ok, rant off. Thanks for listening

2. Both Parties Stink!
"In south Riverside & northern San Diego County (also economically devastated), republicans Darrell Issa, Mary Bono, & Brian Billbray are doing all that they can to deny funds to their districts (never stopped them pre-Obama) & pushing hard against the High Speed Rail project through the region."

This is why the Republicans are hypocritical and undermine there own cause. At least if they railed against spending when they were in power, they might have some credibility to win.

Republicans actually help Democrats, more than you would think, by being pro big government spending when they are in power, then when they lose and turn the keys over to the Democrats later on, the Democrat can also spend wildly.

Only one way to stop the madness, stop voting these losers into office.
