Yet another reason to use public transit in Chicago......
from the Sun-Times:

Parking meter rates start rising today, but there are options
January 4, 2010

BY MARY WISNIEWSKI Staff Reporter

And lest we forget, parking meter prices will start rising around the city today.

Prices will be $4.25 an hour in the Loop, up from $3.50. In the rest of downtown, prices will rise to $2.50 from $2. In neighborhoods and lots, prices will rise to $1.25 from $1.

Weather permitting, Chicago Parking Meters LLC, the private company that took over the parking meter franchise from the city last February, plans to have all meters charging new rates by Jan. 31.

What are the alternatives? The median parking rate for Loop garages is $17 per hour, or $31 for a day, but you can find some deals on the outskirts of downtown. A good rule of thumb is to look west of the river or south of Congress for rates under $18 a day, if you can spare the time and stand the walk.

Or you can take the L -- which is still $2.25.

1. I really liked the L
On my one visit to Chicago I was really impressed by its public transportation.

2. When I lived there, there was one basic reason to take public transit:
no matter what the cost of parking, there was none to be had.

On the other hand, when visiting on vacation in the early 90s, I was surprised to find parking spaces at reasonable rates in the underground lot under Grant Park.
