The Democrats' Authoritarian Health "Reform" Bill: "represents an historic defeat for liberalism"

The Democrats' Authoritarian Health "Reform" Bill and the Ascendency of Corporatism in the Democratic Party
By Miles Mogulescu
The Huffington Post
December 23, 2009

(This is the first of a series of blogs/articles that will try to put the growing disappointment of many progressives at President Obama's policies into a wider political and theoretical perspective about the divide in the Democratic Party between progressives and corporatists.)

If Barack Obama and today's Congressional Democrats were passing Social Security for the first time, instead of a creating a public program, they would likely be mandating that every American buy an annuity from a private, profit-driven Wall Street firm like Goldman Sachs (who could keep 15%-20% of their payments for overhead, profits and executive salaries) with the IRS serving as Wall Street's collection agency. If they were passing Medicare today, they would be mandating that every American buy a health insurance policy from profit-driven companies like Aetna, Humana and Wellpoint that would start paying benefits with 40% co-pays and $10,000 a year deductibles when they turn 65.

Therefore, when Senate "liberals" argue that their health "reform" bill, while compromised, is like the first iterations of Social Security and Medicare and provides a "starter home" that can be added to later, many progressives respond that its foundation is built on quicksand and that it's not incremental reform but a step in the fundamentally wrong direction.

Democrats and liberals once stood for providing a social safety net through government programs like Social Security, Medicare and unemployment insurance, which were administered by government employees for the benefit of the American people and not by private companies for the benefit of their shareholders and executives who receive multi-million dollar salaries and bonuses. For over 60 years, they stood for the principal that health care should be a right and not a privilege and that Medicare should be extended to all Americans.

Democrats in Congress, under the leadership of Barack Obama, have now turned that principal on its head and made health care neither a right, nor a privilege, but an obligation for individual citizens and a government-mandated profit center for private corporations. For the first time in American history, Democrats are about to pass a bill that uses the coercive power of the federal government to force every American -- simply by virtue of being an American -- to purchase the products of a private company. At heart, the Democrats' solution to 48 million uninsured is to force the them to buy inadequate private insurance -- with potentially high deductibles and co-pays and no price controls -- or be fined by the federal government.
In effect, this represents an historic defeat for the type of liberalism represented by the New Deal and the Great Society and the ascendancy of a new type of corporatist liberalism.

Or as David Brooks wrote in The New York Times earlier this summer, " Democrats learned never to go to war against the combined forces of corporate America. Today, whether it is on the stimulus, on health care, or any other issue, the Obama administration and the Congressional leadership go out of their way to court corporate interests, to win corporate support and to at least divide corporate opposition."

And as they have seen the end result of the Democratic Senate's health care bill, progressives have started to get angry. Stripped of the public option, progressives could now look through the Democratic health care bill to its essence: the permanent entrenchment of the corrupt private health insurance corporation as the nexus of the American health care system; the authoritarian liberal solution of solving the problem of the uninsured by using the coercive power of the federal government to force citizens to buy inadequate private insurance sold by oligopolies with their profits subsidized by taxpayer dollars; and the increased political power of the of the private health care industry into the indefinite future, fueled by government money that can then be used to lobby the government for more private benefits.

Social Security wasn't all that great when it started out. Also, remember when the Democrats joined forces with Bush to privatize SS? No?

Drivel.

42. So, did it start out with American citizens being forced to buy
it from a private industry under penalty of law? With the IRS collecting the protection money for Big Business? And if the yfailed to pay the IRS, were they threatened with jail?

49. "Wasn't all that great" is a far cry from a corporate fellating disaster
He is exactly right about this. If we had done it the way we did health care you would be mandated to buy an annuity from a for profit Wall Street firm. It is a perfect analogy to how we've done HCR.

With Congress the way it is now, I seriously DOUBT HCR will get re-visited! Back when, and it was a long time ago, perhaps they were more accommodating! Today, NOT SO MUCH!

So, drivel right back at ya!! This bill SUCKS... and it REALLY SUCKS BADLY!!

happens, the President knows what he's doing. Pisses me off I believed it for so long. Even in September I thought any minute he'd show up and fight for the bill. Guess he did. Just wasn't fighting for the bill we thought he wanted.

69. And even worse
The warnings of the original critics are turning out to be blitheringly accurate. I was reading in July that the public option was already history, that deals had been cut, and that the focus was upon ensuring that coporate america was not going to shift over to the GOP. In the end, that's basically what has happened. Oh, and Gitmo isn't closing either, and I'm pretty sure that's going to last longer than Jan, 2011. Truth is, all they were promising was a change of address. And no one will ever be prosecuted for torture, and we'll still be in Afghanistan in 2016.

...for the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party.

Health Care is merely one facet of that defeat.
Watch Out!
The destruction of Social Security and Medicare are NEXT on the list.
"They" call it "Entitlement Reform", and the seeds for the destruction of Medicare are already planted in this Health "Care" Bill (-$500 Billion Dollars).

It is NO secret that the DLC has been lusting after Social Security dollars for a decade.
The DLC has always wanted to give this money to their friends on Wall Street.

24. Watch Medicare and every boomer should be prepared to pay ...
more of the costs IMHO. Enrollment increases from 46 million to 79 million over the next 20 years, there is no way any Medicare savings can be used to pay for this HC reform bill with the anticipated increase in enrollees ... again IMHO.

And knowing this fact there is nothing in this bill to allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices as promised during the campaign.

56. Nothing New Here
same old same old. Corporate America grows and takes from the working class while the working class pretends our government works for the people. I do agree you have to start someplace but giving a mandate for everyone to have insurance they buy from major corporations while we shaft those people who have decent insurance is just another tax on the working Americans. Speaking of taxes, are the rich still getting the Bush tax cuts? Is the strategy of giving cash to the wealthy so it can trickle down working? It is getting harder to tell Democrats from Republicans. While I'm asking questions, how are those wars working our for us?

65. Actually, I was saying it is a universal loss . . . a wider loss . . .
bodes ill for solving any of the problems of the world -- global warming.

We are face to face with those who control the wealth and natural resources of

our nation. We cannot continue to burn fossil fuels. What should be happening

internationally isn't happening because of the obstruction and control over our

governments which corporations do have.

And, as many are coming to understand, we have a "corporatist" in the White House.

Give 45,000 citizens a year dying because of a lack of universal health care --

more than 2,700+ veterans in the same boat every year -- it is the "end of the world"

for many families. Many here telling us their tragic stories. Keith Olberman making

clear that this is a "terrorism" vs our citizens.

Obviously, voting for the "lesser of evils" decade after decade has only brought us

more corporate fascism.

The '63 coup on JFK was actually a coup on our "people's" government and certainly

the Democratic Party was also a target . . . it was not to be left to be used as an

effective, active instrument for investigation, true reform, holding those responsible

for the political violence in America. And that political violence continued on . . .

and this legislation which is a giveaway to the very corporations which have created our

national health care crisis is criminal!

79. You don't understand what this bill does
If you think the public option is dead you can't read between the lines. Nobody is looking at the entirety of the bill just picking at the pieces. I expect this type of reactionary behavior from the right I am surprised to see so much of it here. This bill has a path to a public option, it just doesn't spell it out in bold print. Read the bill and stop listening to the pundits.

"If you think the public option is dead you can't read between the lines"

I have read between the lines and even between the words.

Do you know what one finds doing that?

Blank spaces.

Are you hallucinating?

82. I'm not explaining further
We saw what happened to the Medicare buy in. You can insult me or use your mind and figure it out. Why do you think Dean and Sanders stopped the kill this bill talk after the managers amendment. You people are being blinded by your rage. Like Pelosi said it doesn't matter what we call it.

83. "Like Pelosi said it doesn't matter what we call it." OK. Call it chicken soup care!
But please don't call it universal health care that is opposed by the private insurance industry and big Pharma.

They wrote the fricken bill!

Take the blinders off.

81. who will follow that "path to a public option"
after all the uninsured are shoveled into the for-profit system? This bill is designed deliberately to enshrine the for-profit health insurance model in perpetuity. That is the grand deal Obama has cut with the insurance cartels: clean up your act (a tiny bit) and we'll insure your indefinite survival. I hate to break it to you, but there is no super secret path to a public option in this bill. Just a path to more corporate profits.

84. Every state with a left leaning legislature will follow it
Edited on Wed Jan-06-10 03:56 PM by California Griz
The red states will be left twisting in the wind and the Republicans will be left to explain to their constituents why they are paying double what the blue state folks are. The insurance companies know whats up they have already started lobby efforts at the state level. If this bill was so great for the insurance companies explain to me why the Republicans are still fighting tooth and nail against it. If it was really going to be a windfall for the insurance companies the pukes would be jumping on board. This is the best first step the Democrats could figure out.

87. When people wake up and realize that they will be forced to buy health insurance,
and those with decent plans will be taxed, there will be hell to pay in the voting booth in many places.

The Republicans are counting on it.

The insurance companies will continue to give the R's money no matter what they do here because the insurance companies are going to want plenty from the Rs later.

It really doesn't matter to the Rs whether or not they might eventually fail to repeal HCR once they are in control in Congress. All they care about is getting back in power.

A self-proclaimed smart guy should be able to figure this stuff out.
