Winter of 2009-2010 Could Be Worst in 25 Years

Nearly the entire eastern half of the United States is enduring bitterly cold temperatures not experienced since 1985. Even Florida, which has been hovering around freezing levels overnight recently, is also feeling the almost-nationwide chill.

"It'll be like the great winters of the '60s and '70s," said AccuWeather.com Chief Meteorologist and Expert Long Range Forecaster Joe Bastardi.

The last time a large swath of severely low temperatures struck the nation was in January 1985. That historic arctic outbreak had below-zero temperatures Fahrenheit stretching from Chicago eastward to New York City, and all the way south to Macon, Ga.

2. Extra snow= global warming...

8. I've wanted to "argue" with a local Repug air personality ...

by first asking him about how Hurricane Katrina gained intensity after initially losing it ...

When the hurricane went over warm water, it picked up moisture ... then when it made landfall, it dumped the moisture as rain.

So ...

it's been noted that Lake Erie near Cleveland hasn't "frozen over" for years (or at least, having frozen over well away from shore) ... and you have the Arctic air coming in from the north ... coming down over the warmer (non-frozen over) water, picking up moisture from the lake ... and, when that moist air hits land, you have what is called "lake effect snow" ... and significant snowfall ...

and that's how Cleveland and Buffalo get heavier snowfalls due to "global warming" ... of course, when a snowflake falls in Cleveland in January, it's made into a total destruction of the idea of "global warming" ...

3. it seems that this year it`s a really, really big story....but

in the late 70`s it was worse. where i live the temp dropped below 32 around thanksgiving and did`t get above 32 till february. during one "spell" the temps did`t break over 0 for over a week.

if anything this has been a mild cold spell. i have`t seen any 15-25 below temps that were common during the 60`s-70`s.

i find it really amusing when the talking heads are shocked that there are cold waves across america during the winter. i did notice that the most "shocked" are the ones who never experienced the 60,70,and 80`s cold waves.

7. It's really too bad that global warming wasn't called climate change from the start

because it would have been much easier to convince people of its validity.

Here in WI this winter is not that unusual. It snows, then it gets cold. Sometimes it snows more, sometimes it gets colder. No big deal, such is life here. Frankly I remember winters in the 60s and 70s as being worse (more snow, more sub-zero temps).

However, the UW-Madison predicts that in 50 years climate change will make winters in WI more like those of southern Iowa and in 100 years our winters will be like Arkansas, but without the equally hot summers. This study was done with the goal of predicting what plants and trees that are native here that will not grow in a warmer climate.

9. Meanwhile,

we're having the warmest January I can remember. It actually rained all night. Yesterday's high was 49, low was 32.

January is usually our coolest month, with an average high of 30 degrees and an average low of 21 degrees.

We had a snowstorm in October, an extremely deep freeze in December, a few days of frozen fog and light snow at xmas, and it's been balmy the rest of the time.

10. It's Long Overdue...

I've chided my kids who are in their 20s they haven't really lived a bad Midwestern winter yet. No weeks on end of sub-zero weather or a good 20-inch snowfall. We've had a bunch of mild winters with maybe a 6 inch storm here or a day or two dip into the deep freeze.

I can recall winters far colder and snowier than what we've had...and if it gets worse, c'est la vie. It just makes the arrival of spring that much more enjoyable. Now you'll have to excuse me, I have a driveway to plough out...

11. We need a good hard winter around here

It will ease the bug and varmint infestations that seem to be getting worse every summer. Should cut back on the deer and coyote populations which have been getting out of hand too. Before disease gets them. Not many hunters left to do the culling.

Sometimes cold isn't all bad.

Got a new furnace last year too. I am glad I did. I don't think the old one would have made it through this winter without some costly repairs. My new one is running a lot.
