Bob Barker Donates $5 Million to Help Save Whales

Longtime TV host and animal lover Bob Barker has made a sizable donation of $5 million to help save whales threatened by hunting.

Barker donated the funds to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which used the donation partly to buy a new ship called the Bob Barker, which saw action Tuesday in the Antarctic when it made contact with Japanese whaling vessels.

Barker's gift also funded a new helicopter for the organization.

Here he is folks — the latest addition to the Sea Shepherd fleet, the MV Bob Barker.

TMZ.com did a bit more digging and found out that Mr. Price is Right donated over $5 million dollars to the anti-whaling org to retrofit this icebreaker. The new (and very secret) ship was the first of the Sea Shepherd fleet to discover the location of the Japanese whaling fleet. Word is, Barker kicked some ass and made the Japanese relocate, thwarting plans for any kills.

You don’t mess with Barker, Japan. You just don’t.

UPDATE Check out the Sea Shepherd’s account of the Barker intercepting the Japanese fleet after the jump. Nice surprise!

The 1,200-ton Norwegian built Antarctic harpoon vessel caught up with the Japanese whaling fleet at 0300 Hours on Wednesday, January 6th, in the area of Commonwealth Bay off the Adelie Coast at 143 Degrees 17 Minutes East and 66 Degrees 43 Minutes South. The Norwegian flag cracked in the chill Antarctic air as the silhouette of the whaler gave every indication that the ship was sent to support the Japanese whalers.

33. He is a radical animals rights nut.
Let's be honest here. I don't think he gives a flying eff about whales or about animal "overpopulation." He'd just as soon not have cats or dogs exist.

And please do be specific and not just flinging about your usual anti-animal rhetoric like a monkey flings feces.

15. The Japanese really need to get it together.
Their slaughter of whales and dolphins is a travesty.

And yes, I know I am singling out one country. However, they are the world's worst offenders.

21. Yay Bob!
I just donated to Sea Shepherd for the first time on New Year's Day.

Ironically, I've been concentrating the tail end of my holiday donations on low cost spay and neuter programs in the 5 states that have shelters who kill animals with gas (or worse). North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky. Rescues in each state can be found at this link.

http://muttcats.com/shelters/index.htm

I also gave some bucks to Help Save One in Rhode Island, which pulls animals from high kill shelters in the 5 states above and just won $1,000 from the Animal Rescue site I've been clicking on every day.

To help people keep their pets, and their companionship, donations went to organizations who are providing pet food for those who can't afford it right now in those states. And to those who provide pet food delivered with Meals on Wheels, so seniors won't have to feed pets food from their own plates. Petey's Promise, Animal Haven of Asheville, and HOPE on Wheels are a few.

I gave a lot over the holidays because I know animal charities are especially hurting. And I really needed something to feel good about this year. I'd just given to Mindy's Memory Primate Sanctuary last month when I read in the online newsletter that donations were down 90%! Fortunately, they had a few grants come through in the New Year, so they will be breathing a little easier.

It really didn't hurt a bit to give. As the amount started going up and up I just reminded myself that that's what I would have spent on cigarettes if I hadn't stopped smoking over 18 months ago. And I'd MUCH rather that money go to ease suffering. It was extra special to be able to give EX-smoking money. Even as a light smoker, it was quite a bit.

22. Kudos to you! I give to our animal shelter here and feel so good about it.
I am now going to begin giving to animal rescue mission in Florida to help stop the illegal and torturing way that these backyard slaughter houses kill horses, goats, pigs, etc. They are filthy and then they sell the meat cheap to people. I can't believe that the people buying this meat aren't very sick or dead from it. Go to animalrescuemission.org if you think you can stand looking at the videos and reading the info. Of course, it is in Miami-Dade County! It is unbelievable!
