Poll question: Let's forget about ships fighting. This poll is exclusively about whaling itself.
The activity, and its merits, or lack thereof.

1. Other: Whaling is a legitimate commercial activity, but current limits might need to be adjusted.
I'll defer to actual science for a sustainable harvest limit.

6. Cetacean brains are as well developed as human brains -
these are not dumb animals. They have intelligence close to, if not exceeding, our own.

I also trust to science - and science says we need to stop the slaughter.

12. I'm not aware of anything that whales provide to commerce (short of
the meat, which is why Japan lies and says they are doing research) that is worth anything or can't be made cheaper and with other things. Its a crime.

17. Truthfully? *Some* whale's are are nearly as intelligent as us.
There are many species of whale, with varying levels of intelligence. Some species have brain development and demonstrated cognitive and memory abilities that rival our own. Others are no more intelligent than cows.

21. +1
Science shows that cetaceans have high intelligence, advanced communication (with syntax), and culture.

Spain "granted" rights to great apes; perhaps it's time to do so with cetaceans.

18. Is there a sustainable harvest limit?
We are generally talking about large animals with low birth rates. It's unlikely such animals provide a good source of anything because it's really hard to have a sustainable harvest limit.

7. I was talking to my brother who lives in Japan. He said that the government
whaling offices in Japan are chalked full of people who would have no purpose or job if Japan stopped whaling. It is an inertia thing. Some traditions are taboo to be changed in Japan. Same as corn subsidies in the USA. That does a lot of damage to actual people around the world but the USA doesn't even think about lifting that because there are so many vested interests. In fact it is taboo to talk about that in congress.

Don't know how the kids in Japan feel about whaling. Maybe when the next generation comes of age they will stop whaling. I hope it isn't too late.

8. Other.
Whaling should be allowed, provided it's tightly controlled so as to not endanger whale species.

9. Whaling should be banned worldwide. No exceptions.
And I don't give a damn what somebody's ancestors did. Their ancestors are one reason we have to act to save whales now.

15. Other, I guess. I'm OK with sustainable, humane whaling to meet an economic demand
However, although some species can be hunted sustainably, I don't think current practices are humane and I'm not convinced that there's a genuine demand outside of some traditional indigenous fisheries...
