night this year. All of the predicting by the MSM is that Dems are going to lose and lose big. Of course more Repubs are retiring than Dems but that is usually not mentioned. The party of NO is honestly under the impression they have a big win coming up in November. Their Chairman, Mike Steele, however is of another opinion. I may not agree on much with Steele, but on this I do. Dems are going to do just fine. Granted, there will be some losses, that's part of the cycle, but very few I'm sure. Now, to watch CNN, Faux or MSNBC will be the biggest decision I'll have. Joey Scar will be on the list the following day. I cannot wait!

I'm estimating about 10 in the House, and a net of one or two in the Senate.

15. I find there are progressive organizations in most places that are

looking for candidates even for local elections. We should get involved with some of these folks, see what and who is involved, and get to work NOW.

I GUARANTEE you the republicans are already working hard to get their people elected.

8. That metric's meaningless in congressional races.

Well, almost meaningless. There's something to be said for brand name, I'll grant you. But in an individual congressional race, the brand of the individual candidates is way, way more important than the generic brand of the party. Now, add in the fact that in many of the swing districts that Democrats picked up in 06 and 08, the GOP brand isn't nearly as damaged as it is nationwide. Now, add in an energized conservative base coupled with a cynical, disenfranchised Democratic one.

I don't follow House races quite as closely as I do the Senate -- there's just too much to keep track of -- but in the Senate, I like the Dems' chances to pick up seats in New Hampshire and maybe Missouri or Louisiana. But Delaware, Nevada and Colorado are all potential GOP pickups. At this point, I've even shaky about Burris' seat in Illinois. Now, consider that Dodd stepping aside may strengthen Connecticut, but Dorgan's retirement in North Dakota practically throws that race to Gov. John Hoeven. And then throw in Arkansas, where Blanche Lincoln faces the tried and true political maxim that, given the choice between a fake Democrat and a real Republican, the voters will go for the real thing every time.

All in all, it's possible that things could stay the same. But if anyone picks up seats, it'll probably be the GOP.

Tell the voters that the Democrats are going to lose big. Speculating they can drive the fringe Democratic and the Independent voters to either stay away on election day or vote for their guy.

9. They won't be the ones who are shocked

Up to 25% of Americans are out of work. That number was only half at the beginning of this year. People continued to blame Bush for a time but given Obama's rhetoric they expected much more out of him than they usually do. By the metric of the average American he failed. They wanted him to focus on one thing and one thing only. They elected him to be another FDR and so far he has not.

Perceptions of the election will be set by March. There will really be no way around it. Economically speaking it is not possible for the job situation to improve by April-June to the point to where major Democratic losses can be staved off. The Senate probably cannot be taken over. The House probably will.

The only thing that can stop the Republicans is if they can't get the Tea Party faction under control. If they can shut them up and run moderates in moderate districts the Dem house majority is toast because this election is very close to being nationalized and the general pattern in America has always been that when unemployment is rising people always vote for the party out of power.


Look at the 70s. Party control consistently changed and you saw set backs and gains solely because neither party solved the issue of unemployment for most of the decade. Why expect now to be different?
