My Reinterpretation of Zorro - a Thought Experiment
Given all the discussion of reinterpreting characters, I think the time is ripe to introduce my reinterpretation of Zorro in film form - in it I want to play up strongly his Catholic Faith. There will be scenes of him attending mass and confessional, taking communion, discussions with Father Rodrigo on the morality of his work - really I estimate about 20 to 40 percent of the movie will deal with his Catholicism - I really want to hone in on that side of his character. Obviously his Catholicism has been part of the Zorro myth, but I don't think it's been front and center the way it needs to be.

So here's some questions.

Would you want to see this movie?

Would you invest your money (assuming you had money to invest which most of us don't) in such a movie?

Would you expect such a movie to be a financial success?

If your answers to any of the above questions are no, does that make you anti-Catholic?

I did see Zorro the Gay Blade back when it came out and really liked it - it is cheesy but there's nothing wrong with a pulp character being cheesy.

2. If I claimed property rights on Zorro as a means of stopping it, that would be...

wrong. Whether out of anti-Catholic motivation or not.

And that's the issue with Sherlock Holmes. This twisted lady thinks she owns a 120-year-old character who is so universal in the culture that everyone understands "No shit Sherlock" before they've even heard it.

3. Point please.
Is all this because the idea of a gay Sherlock Holmes bothers you in a strange, disturbingly arousing, way?

5. Damn. You've found me out. I'm secretly gay and therefore hate gay people.

4. It would be more interesting if Zorro is an Atheist
and has religious conversations with Father Rodgrigo and stuff happens that could be just a coincidence or it could be divine intervention.

6. interesting idea; could be great in the hands of a talented writer, or sucky in the hands of a hack
So it would depend on the quality of the writing, for me.

7. Wait...
Are you saying Zorro would show up at Mass or Don Diego? I don't think Zorro could go to Mass without the risk of being captured by the Alcalde.

I would probably see the movie just because I'm a Zorro buff, but I wouldn't invest any money in a movie that makes the institution of Catholicism look good.

It's not like the Catholic Church was any more honorable back in the 1820s. Historically, the local government and the church would have been intertwined as to essentially be the same thing so the local priest helping the guy fighting against the government would have been an anomaly. Ben Kenobi was wrong when he said, "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy," than Mos Eisley. The Catholic Church earns that title, and Zorro would most likely be "robbing" them of their riches gotten from the donations given by guilt-ridden peones.

8. You are just flogging this horse to death, aren't you?
One spawned thread/poll from you about this seemed like it was caused by the fact that you were a little pissed off over losing an argument in the original thread.

Now, you spawn ANOTHER one?

I'm beginning to think you are becoming obsessed about this. Are you going to make it your life's goal to make sure no one EVER portrays Sherlock Holmes as gay as long as you live?

Can't you find ANYTHING more positive that might be important for your life's mission?

10. What if he was a gay Catholic?
Really, being religious is not the same thing as some inborn character trait and I'm frankly astounded that you would make that kind of leap.

11. It's telling that this has you so pissed off
Very, very telling, indeed.

Beyond that, it would not present a problem, given that Zorro was a wealthy Spaniard who probably was Catholic anyway.
