Oregon man freed after jetliner disruption

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Federal authorities say a disruptive passenger has been released without charges after military jets escorted a jetliner back to Portland. The FBI says there is no known link to terrorists.

Military officials say the jets were sent up Wednesday as a precaution.

The action comes amid heightened concern about airline security and the charge that a Nigerian man tried to blow up a jetliner bound for Detroit on Christmas Day.

which was NOT reported in the article. I am not stating any opinion either way as to the appropriateness of charging him. But, reporters USED to actually REPORT the news which would have included asking the reasons behind the actions. This is sloppy damned reporting.

Neither the person involved- nor the airline or federal officials would be well advised to make further statements- especially to the media under the circumstances.

The reporter's duty was to ask and to report. If the officials refused to answer (as I agree, they likely might) then THAT is what the reporter was obligated to report. This isn't rocket science. :shrug:


There have been several of these episodes in recent years and it is not true that the officials always refuse to explain their actions, but the point is that the reporter is obligated to ask the question and to REPORT.

A guy and his girlfriend "looked scary" and made some "threatening" remarks.

The crew was annoyed and a passenger or two were "frightened."

Passengers said they were unaware of the incident until two people were escorted off the aircraft in Portland.

"It was kind of scary for a bit," said Lahaina resident Marsha Bond, who added she was about to "kiss the floor" when the plane touched down at Kahului Airport around 7:30 p.m.

For just a second, Bond said she was frightened enough to think about her grandchildren and her new puppy.

But fellow passenger Oren Herson said he wasn't shaken.

"It was no big deal," he said while waiting for his luggage at Kahului Airport. He called the flight "long."

Herson and other passengers said they were told over the airline intercom that they had a mechanical problem and had to return to Portland. Passengers said they realized it wasn't a mechanical problem when they saw six law enforcement officers enter the plane when they landed and a man and a woman escorted off the aircraft.

Later, police reported that a problem with a passenger was the cause for the return to Portland.

Passengers said they were not aware that two military jets were escorting them back.

...The unruly passenger, a 56-year-old man from Salem, Ore., was released after the FBI and Port of Portland police officers concluded their interview of the man. Officials also interviewed the crew and others, including the man's companion. The case has been turned over to federal prosecutors. It was not immediately known whether charges would be filed.

...Bond, like other passengers interviewed Wednesday night at Kahului Airport's baggage claim area, said she heard no commotion on the airline.

But the drug counselor at Lahainaluna High School described the man escorted off the plane as "scary." She said the woman escorted off the aircraft with him had red hair and looked disheveled.

Herson, 34, who arrived on Maui to work with the forestry construction company Oregon Woods, had another perspective, saying the couple in their 40s to 50s "didn't look too threatening to me."

5. Was there even a "disruption" or was it a storm-trooper stewardess moment?

I witnessed a "disruption" once, it was a pair of flight attendants harassing a woman who took a toddler to pee, interfering with nobody in the process. A pilot flying as a passenger interjected and told the flight attendants to shut the fuck up or he would immediately report to a specific person on arrival.

While I understand why crews want to be hyper-vigilant about control of the cabin, I've witnessed far too many incidences where the flight attendant was a complete jerk about something minor and hid behind "security" as the reason. Security my foot.

This sort of thing must happen ten...twenty times a day. People being disruptive...people finding "strange" things on planes.

We just barely hear about it until something either happens, or almost happens. Then they come out of the woodwork like little cockroaches at night, trying to scare the hell out of us all.


Just like the summer of the shark. Every time we turned around there was a new SHARK ATTACK!!! It got so bad it seemed we might be ripped to pieces by "Jaws" when we turned on the kitchen faucets or when we sat on the toilet. The truth of it was, there were FEWER shark attacks that year than usual.
