Huh?One of the day’s major stories is of a battle in Najaf between Iraqi forces and members of an apparent Islamic cult which was poised to do a lot of killing, according to Iraqi officials.
Those same officials are saying a combination of Iraqi security forces and the U.S. military killed hundreds of the fighters although the enemy apparently shot down a U.S. helicopter, killing two soldiers.
The engagement is being hailed as a signal success by Iraqi and U.S. officials since the Iraqis are being portrayed as in the lead. In an interview with National Public Radio, President Bush said of the news from Najaf:
“My first reaction on this report from the battlefield is that the Iraqis are beginning to show me something."Excuse me, Mr. President, but how much did the Iraqis really show?
The news stories about the fight in Najaf indicate it was air power that proved decisive.
