I had to renew my D/L today. I was astonished to find out that I needed my
birth certificate and 2 other forms of I.D. My old license is no longer proof of identity.
I happen to be in Florida, so it was bad enough when I learned that the cost of a D/L and registration has now doubled and tripled over the last year. But when they asked me for my birth certificate... along with copies of tax receipts and/or voter registration and a copy of my utility bill, I could almost hear the voice of the Gestapo.. "your papers please".
Maybe I'm over reacting.. but it seems to me that we are no more than one underwear bomber away from a Federal Passport and regional check points.

Jan 1, 2010 Real I.D. Law Now In Effecthttp://www.miamiherald.com/569/story/1395379.htmlA trip to the DMV has always required a certain level of mental preparation -- the patience to endure what could be a long wait, the self-esteem to shrug off a license picture you know doesn't really look like you.
Get ready to dig through closets and filing drawers for your birth certificate or U.S. passport. Those items, along with federally-issued citizenship or naturalization documents, or consular reports of a birth overseas, are the only documents that will qualify as ``primary identification.''

Establishing identity: Your old driver's license will no longer be accepted as a primary proof of identity. You'll need one of the following: a government-issued birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, federally issued citizenship or naturalization documents, or consular reports of a birth overseas.
In addition, applicants will need to bring each of the following:
Proof of Social Security number: Acceptable forms of proof include your Social Security card, W-2 form, or paycheck.
Proof of residential address: You'll need two of these. Acceptable items include monthly mortgage statements, Florida Voter Registration Cards, utility bills from the past two months, or a Florida vehicle registration or title.
