Why did Oliver North's Senate bid fail?

Was it because of the scandal and lies surrounding Iran/Contra or was he too far to the right even for very conservative Virginians? I ask this because I'm wondering how his campaign would have done in this atmosphere of terror, terror, terror, post 9/11. It also crossed my mind that Erik Prince might run for office. Not basing that on anything I've read or heard, but I was just wondering "what if" Erik Prince ran for office?

when terrorists like Ollie North and Erik Prince weigh in on terrorism. North is a criminal and should never be eligible for public office. The only reason he is still out there at all is the fact that he is in with the real power behind our government, the Bush cabal and it's industrial/CIA/government influnece.
