the Obama administration's performance to date.
These would include the continuation of several of the "anti-terrorism" policies(rendition, eavesdropping on US citizens, etc.) that we railed against here when Bush employed them; the failure to even investigate the Bush administration's crimes in office; and, the escalation of the Afghan war. The uncounted failures of this president to LEAD in the now failed Health Care Reform effort, however, are the freshest, most numerous and most blatant wounds inflicted by this president on his base.
So who are we: Obama's base? Maybe I should use the past tense: who WERE we?
I guess we're not very fashionable of late. We are the "extreme left" or the "radical liberal fringe" or some other combination of perjoratives and, to some, including Der Rahm, apparently, we just don't matter.
But, again---who are we?
We're the anti-war folks. We're the weirdos with that damned flaky philosophy that we should avoid killing each other if at all possible.
We are for equal rights---of everyone. Black, white, brown, gay, straight, old young, rich, poor, male or female. Equal---all of them.
We may not all be religious, but we do agree with the Bible verses (Luke 10: 7 and 1st Timothy 5:18) that teach that "the laborer is worthy of his hire". We support that laborer's right to organize and act to secure decent wages and safer working environments.
We also answer the Biblical inquiry "Am I my brother's keeper?" with a resounding "Of course!"
We also hold the truly radical view that people are far more important than corporations and that there are lots of things more important than money.
I still believe that we are the "salt of the earth"; the conscience of the common man and the foundation upon which the Democratic Party, and this nation, must be based if either is to prosper over the long term.
And, so, Mr. President, I'm not "going off". But, I am not happy and there is a limit to my patience and my sense of charity. I'll wait and I'll watch, but you take me for granted at your peril.
