Let's go back to Sept 2001..
Imagine we had a connected, thoughtful president.
What if he had said:
"Starting TODAY, we are setting up a new educational program.. Graduate college with a B or better..with a degree in Middle Eastern languages/history/or related fields, and you will have a good-paying job waiting for you..and your college expenses paid in full if you keep that job for 5 years."
We have had EIGHT YEARS..eight long years, and how many really smart kids did not have the opportunity to step up to the challenge? How many linguists did we miss out on?
Instead, people shopped until they dropped, and we are no closer to a mass-understanding of the difficulty we are more embroiled in than ever.
Eight years later, our "enemy" is still multiple steps ahead of us, using primitive means to confound us, as we spend billions of borrowed dollars trying to stop things that might have happened, but did not...and the enemy is on to the "next thing"..
We know now that they are probably not hunkered down in caves, like Cheney tried to tell us, but in many places all over the world, there are bearded men, watching CNN & Al Jazeerra, laughing their asses off while we spin our wheels & chase our tails..
Our "experts" all seem to be the same stale old guys who never got it right, no matter how many clues they had, and yet they still show up daily, to tell us what we need to do..
Al Qaeda is like a virus, spreading out of control, and no amount of drones or guns or soldiers with guns will eliminate it. Killing the "number 2" guy for the 40-leventh time will not help...killing bin Laden won't even help.. If someone kills the pope, does catholicism end?
They don't have to "win", to win. They are Lucy to our Charlie Brown..
