Britain without the gulfstream

Satellite image of snow over the UK, Pic: NASA/GSFC, MODIS Rapid Response

Britain is unusually warm for its latitude because of the gulfstream. This week, however, http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2010/1/6/822520/-Freak-Current-Takes-Gulf-Stream-to-Greenland">the gulfstream is on vacation in Greenland. So this is what Britain is like without the gulfstream.

1. Thanks for posting this.
I wanted to do it earlier today, but I was working. This is currently my desktop background. It's unfortunate that my old stomping grounds in East Anglia are covered in clouds. :-D

4. Ireland still looks green and lush
Anyone care to explain? I'm a little fuzzy on the Gulf Stream trajectory thing.

9. It's Hard To See Ireland...
The gulf stream generally runs up the East coast the across then Atlantic around the 40th parallell curling around Ireland and the eastern coast of the British Isles. Instead of making the big arc, the trade winds are pushing it further north into Greenland (warming them up instead).

There have been climatologists who suggest that a loss of this current could turn Europe into an icebox and was a major cause for the ice ages.

7. Most of Europe wouldn't be habitable without the Gulf Stream.
Sunny Italy-Rome is at the same latitude as NYC.
