TODAY shows manufacturer of full body scanner, confirms DOES NOT SHOW WHAT'S INSIDE BODY
Edited on Fri Jan-08-10 07:52 AM by 2 Much Tribulation
Yesterday I posted the "BRIAN WILLIAMS MSNBC BULLSHIT REPORT..." - about what amounted to a several minute free advertising campaign for full body scanners concluding with Brian Williams verbal ejaculation that these scanners "show everything" (but out of concern for families, they wouldn't). This was not just a reference to body parts under clothes, but immediately prior they had claimed to do a demonstration showing that even a plastic butter knife and a baggie full of flour were detected. Original thread here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=7417846&mesg_id=7417846

But TODAY, the TODAY show with Ann Curry subbing for Meredith Vieira had the manufacturer or a manufacturer of full body scans was interviewed (sorry I didn't get the name).

The manufacturer confirmed that the full body scanner only detects what is under clothes and DOES NOT DETECT anything "inside the body." This was essentially confirmed twice since he also said there was no interference or effect on body implants.

Here's the deal: Now that they've publicized what the full body scanner detects, and what it doesn't detect, it will be REALLY EASY for any person contemplating terra to work around the scanning system by doing what drug mules have done for years (swallowing or otherwise inserting the payload) and what suicide bombers have already done in Saudi Arabia (soon to be known as "the A-Bomber" or the "A-Hole Bomber").

Consequently, full body scanners are a waste of money, they won't stop a single incident of terra where there's any significant commitment to making it happen via a suicide bombing.

4. yes. and then in that falshood, other things will likely be overlooked
thinking the scan will be the end all of safety.

6. I found this link for Brian Williams'(BS) resport yesterday, here it is
Four minutes and 36 seconds of advertising for Homeland Security vendors here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/#34757084 (See link for "Live Demonstration of Body Scanner" featuring Tom Costello of a suburban VA manufacturing concern for full body scanners featured and "show everything" is stressed as to, first, body parts, and second objects on the person...They showed a BOXCUTTER (sigh), replica of plastic explosive, replica gun, and plastic butter knife)

And, another 2 minutes 24 seconds of air travel hysteria on the same day at this same link as above, but different video title from "Live Demonstration of Body Scanner", see: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/#34757084 (announcing new federal effort to spend money for technology that will sense objects under people's clothing)

10. Only what is "on the skin" is able to be searched. Does that standard help?
I'll let more informed female or male readers apply the facts to the above standard or rule regarding what the body scanners do.

8. We must accept the fact that air travel could go away
Lets assume that terrorists put two individuals on two separate airplanes with rectal detonation devices. They explode, and the planes come down. Next day... two more. Eventually, the only way to fly an airplane would be to subject every single passenger to a complete rectal exam. Clearly this is impossible. At that point, what choice do you have but to shut down commercial air travel?

There will always be ways to get detonation devices on airplanes that are undetectable. Just chasing after the latest attempt is folly.

12. That assumes no technology exists to see
what johnny jihad stuffed up his ass. Imaging technology is quite advanced, MRI, ultrasound come to mind. The airlines will not shutdown.

14. So we're going to do an MRI of everyone who flies?
Then why aren't we doing it now? We know johnny jihad can do it. Why aren't we testing for it? Are we waiting for him to actually DO it?

And how exactly is this going to work? What if he swallows it? Are we going to read whats in EVERY travellers stomach? At some point, if we turn the simple requirement of getting onto an airplane into an all-invasive procedure, commercial air travel becomes almost non-viable.

We're trying to chase something thats unchaseable. It is impossible to bombproof a plane, and always will be.

18. Bomb proof is Impossible. But imaging
can be changed to scan a person for explosives or detonators if the need arises. If it takes the same amount of time or less I have no problem walking through a full body imager (mri / ultrasound) , just like a metal detector. If you have ever had imaging done you would know its not all that invasive. My interest is time and not getting up by some religious asshole.

This guy did not have anything up his ass. Better screening of passengers would be more effective. I cant drive to latin america or china so I have to fly. We are not going back to the days of ocean steamers. They hijack those too.

20. Why aren't we imaging NOW then?
Yes, this guy had nothing stashed in the dark regions. However... he could have. Suicide bombers have done it in the past. So why aren't we imaging NOW? You say "if the need arises"... .sure sounds like the need is here to me.

Have you seen any demonstrations on how quickly (and effectively) you could process a large number of people using imaging equipment that could sniff out whats on the inside too? I haven't. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I don't think its possible. And if it COULD be I'm really curious why we haven't already done it.

I agree with the better screening... but how does that work exactly? Interviewing every one?

13. Air travel will need to go away anyway. It's not sustainable.
We simply will not have enough oil to power all of these planes. I don't see electric planes anytime in the future. (hehe) Maybe hydrogen, but nope, we are too late for any of that.

19. Well since I cant miracle my way to china or brazil
the airplane will be in use until a technology supersedes it. We have plenty of oil for air travel. Kerosene can probably be derived from a biofuel, like diesel. Would require changing how the engines work based on energy content but people are not going to stop flying.

All this extra security is going to cost more. They already charge out the ass for bags and other things. I think they charge you for breathing now on the flight. It just keeps going up.

The new Al Qaeda training sessions have got to be a hoot--testing to find out who among them can stuff the biggest amount of foreign substance up their asses. And what will the Ugandas think?
