Hendron recalled as a caring neighbor

By Paul Hampel and Carolyn Tuft
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
01/08/2010

WEBSTER GROVES — He brewed his own beer and freely shared it.

He raked neighbors' leaves after collecting his own.

He was a religious man with a statue of St. Joseph in his front garden, and who doted on a son with learning disabilities.

Relatives, friends and neighbors of Tim Hendron reacted with dismay and disbelief to reports that the man they described as kind and easygoing had gone on a deadly shooting rampage Thursday morning. snip

"He was a good family man and he was devoted to his boy," she said. "And he was a prayerful person. This is in God's hands now."

2. Shooting your neighbors does not make one "a good family man".
It makes you a murderer.

3. Every rapist, murderer and child molester is always
defined by his/her neighbors as an upstanding citizen, more often than not religious, who always helps and is nice and kind and so on and on and on.

Frankly, sometimes it is sickening. Sure, he may have been a good neighbor TO YOU, but he sure as hell wasn't that nice to the people he effin' killed, was he?

There was a case in Wilmington, NC, here recently where a popular karate school owner/instructor was arrested on several counts of indecencies with minors. There was video of him touching girls inappropriately. At first, it was just one accusation which then snowballed into many more.

But at first, all his relatives as well as other parents whose children attended that school were in total denial, claiming this guy (also a very religious man) was kind, generous, loved children, etc. etc. Some even went as far as attacking the victim.

Only when more and more parents came out with further accusations of child molestation the vitriol against the original victim ceased and thankfully this guy's now in jail.

Strangely, I get real bad vibes about people who are described as being strong believers, do-gooders, and kind. I wonder what dark secrets they harbor and/or if they use their outwardly generosity and faith as a mask to hide their true selves. More often than not, my vibes are correct (too many examples to confirm).

4. Superficial observations of someone who "acts nice". I doubt if any of my
neighbors would characterize me as "nice"; certainly not "prayerful" -but I'm not going to snap and commit mass murder. 'Kind and easygoing', yeah right.

5. He snapped after losing a job he held for 30 years and
getting screwed with his pension plan - note he was part of a class action law suit over the pension before he was fired.
In this economic climate, expect more killings like this one.

9. It's no excuse obviously, but I understand how a person could snap under those circumstances.

6. And why wouldn't he have been? People look for monsters who are never there
Hitler was fond of dogs and a brave soldier. Stalin was a bright and charming man. Why do we expect, or try to portray, mere murderers to be evil monsters in all aspects of their lives and at all times when genocidal tyrants were not? People are not that simple. There are no heroes who are role models in every way. There are no whipping buys who are despicable in every way.

Good ole Christian boy snaps and we label him overwhelmed.

Good ole Muslim boy snaps and we label him a terrorist.

Something is funny here.

11. firstly, way too much emphasis on christian. du is touchy about that
i dont have a stake in it but what it is. secondly, i feel the same about muslim. third,

bullshit.

terrorists arent "snapping". they are being molded. simply not the same. i think the differences are pretty clear, though you may not see a difference.

regardless, your argument has nothing to do with what i posted.

13. I think we may be using different definitions of "snap"
Edited on Fri Jan-08-10 10:20 AM by NNN0LHI
To me the in both situations to me the word "snap" means gone insane.

You can say this fellow in Mo. wasn't "molded", but he certainly was. He died thinking he was going to heaven. Perhaps after a short stop in purgatory for the workplace incident? But this fellow sounds like someone who believes in an afterlife.

Its woo just like the Muslim terrorists have with their 97 virgins insanity. And they are insane too. They will end up eating dirt sandwiches just like the rest of us. I don't care how hard they pray.

They are all insane murderers and should be treated as such.

14. i dont see it the same way.
i dont think he went insane. and it is not excusing. nor os the molding or conditioning of a person. just reasons.

my mom went 59 years being responsible, making good choices, creating a good life to live for herself and all of us. shit happened and in small amount of time it took her over. she killed herself. she was a christian too. her killing herself had nothing to do with being a christian, or indicative of who she was. it had all to do with being overwhelmed in pain and acting on it. this man seems to have done the same. women tend to turn it inward. men tend to turn it outward

again

none of these are excuses. jsut reasoning and understanding. still wrong.

12. It's about making themselves feel better..
Nobody wants to admit that they lived next to / worked with someone capable of such a heinous act and had no clue.

So they tell anyone who'll listen how "He was such a nice guy."- in other words, "There's nothing I could have seen that would have clued me in!"

The reality is that yah, there probably were things that an observant person would have seen, if they'd gotten to know him more than just waving at him when they were raking leaves in the yard. We're so insulated from people these days that we feel guilty when one of our neighbors turns out not to be the stepford wife/husband that we think they are/should be.

15. Experts tell us that people don't just "snap."
Their behavior begins changing in response to some sort of negative event over a period of time, only people may discount it or belittle it. They ignore the signs until the person does something dramatic. Then, after the fact, everyone says "I don't know why he did it, it was out of the blue, he was always nice, it's like he just snapped."
