Seriously, if one more dumbass poo-pahs Global Warming because of the recent cold spell & snow....
I swear I'm gonna give them a peace of my mind.

How stupid can these people get? Global Warming doesn't mean that we won't have cold days or snow or other wintry things. But yet again I heard some dipwad talk about how "Global Warming is all bull because once again it was cold and snowy out. What a bunch of crock" from someone who claims to be 'educated'

Global Warming is not local it is GLOBAL. It's not about your local weather report but the overall changes happening around the globe that could have serious impact on this planet. So what if a cold wave is gripping the states right now, that doesn't change the fact that the polar icecaps are melting at an alarming rate. And sure, perhaps we don't live near these melting ice caps so who really cares, but we have large populated areas along the coast and barely above sea level that may be impacted seriously by these changes.

The earth was created with it's own 'thermostat' that helps to regulate the temperatures so they are inhabitable by all lifeforms. Why don't these dingbats do a little reading and get a clue as to how Global Warming is breaking this thermostat.

Yikes, the stupid hurts so much it burnz!!!!

6. My 14 year old nephew said at Christmas "it's Global Climate Instability"
to a freeper-y relative who was saying there's no such thing as global warming because of the cold snap we had locally. I was proud of my nephew. He said they had talked about it in science class and his science teacher stressed the "global climate instability" as opposed to local weekly weather. Thank goodness for non-Fox Noise watching teachers!

The models predict more variability of all types: bigger storms, longer dry spells -- and yes, more brutal cold snaps.

Pity the misleading but sound-bite-friendly phrase "global warming" has become so widespread.

It's a hot topic among the knee-jerkers. "Hey it's cold outside, so there must be no truth in that Global Warming stuff". Duh.

Give me a break. It was as recently as October when my area posted record high temps for the date. The RW Hatemonger Media cranked up their bullshit campaign when the first snowflakes started to fall. Let's see if they still want to spout the same bullshit when it's the middle of August. I guarantee not one of those lying assholes will have a word to say about GlobalWarming then.

we are breaking all kinds of cold weather records down here in ..what used to be ..sunny warm Florida!!

Hard to convince people of any kind of "warming"

That word "warming" needs to be replaced!

I am even hearing "warming" jokes in the grocery store lines..while people are trying to bundle up in a place where people don't have real warm clothes ..I am seeing very "creative outfits" around here right now!!
..as I sit here freezing with what my hubby calls "throw away socks" and my new uniform of a varity of sweats, not nessessarily matching or attractive!!!

11. We're having the coldest temps right now than we've seen in over 20 years. I've heard
several of the low-info people at work wishing we had some of that global warming. It seems like they expect that global warming means the entire earth will be transformed into a tropical climate. You cannot explain it to them or reason with them anymore than I can to my dog. All they see is that it's cold outside.

...willfully ignorant and superficial...or inherently dishonest. The fact is that even in the 70s, there were significantly more papers predicting global warming than global cooling. In the period of 1965-1979, there were seven papers that indicated cooling. By contrast, there were 42 papers predicting warming. So, there goes the global cooling myth!

Further, the following scientific organizations have acknowledged AGW as a real problem:

You know how many of those organizations endorsed "global cooling?" None. Not a one.

Your graph has zero to do with climate. It is, in essence, a weather report. And it's not particularly good since it is the temperature of the lower troposphere and not the surface temperature.

But, hey, keep trying. I'm sure you'll fool someone.

I'm afraid that you've read too much into my comments. Perhaps you're just a little too defensive on the issue? I made a remark in regards to the attitude during the 70's nothing more nor nothing less. I didn't deny that there's such a thing a climate change (god knows living in Michigan the weather changes every five minutes). But hey, I've grown used to angry people that just look for reasons to go off on others anonymously via the internet. Hopefully I haven't caused your blood pressure to rise too much and that you'll live another day without bursting a vein.

If you have no desire to cure your ignorance, then perhaps you should skip these discussions.

If you are not ignorant and are merely attempting to deceive, then quit whining when you get caught.

But please stop spewing bullshit. It's a complete waste of your time and will lead to embarrassment.

53. You appear to be hallucinating.
If you think pointing out your obvious errors is claiming the "sky is falling" then I suggest you more closely examine the mushrooms you've been eating. They may be "funny."

You don't appear to have asked any questions, so I can't possibly have dodged any. Instead, you made a wild claim based on irrelevant data. When I pointed this out and indicated that you might want to be become acquainted with the subject before commenting on it, you doubled-down on the nonsense by stating that I don't get to pick and choose who comments. That happens to be correct. I don't. But since I didn't attempt to pick and choose, this just merely provides more fodder for the mushroom hypothesis.

And was that last line supposed to be some sort of threat? :bounce:

Simmer down. You made a mistake. We all do. Happily, you can easily avoid the same mistake in the future by merely taking time to learn about the topic.

And if you didn't claim anything, then what was the point of this: "

???

My bona fides are of no concern since my information is correct and in agreement with the published science. Were I to disagree with the science, then my bona fides would be of interest, of course.

And as a matter of fact I do have a problem. I'm very, very tired of those with a strong *feeling* about AGW and who know next to nothing (or less) on the subject making brain-liquefyingly stupid statements and utterly unfounded assertions. I do not regard that problem as a fault since there is adequate scientific reason to believe that such morons are putting my grandchildren at risk over their ideology or endocrine system.

And if filling your head with facts and encouraging you to research the topic is being a "shithead", then the world could do with a LOT more shitheads.

"My bona fides are of no concern since my information is correct and in agreement with the published science."

So if you're in agreement with what the current meme is, then you need not have any credentials?

Those scientists in the 70's that were concerned with global cooling had credentials too. My entire point was not to disclaim anything, all I said is that there was a time that people thought the opposite hysterically like people do now. And I posted a graph that showed temperatures over a few decades. And I guess all the evidence you need is the evidence that goes along with your thinking? If it doesn't fit your position, then it is discarded without question. I thought scientists were open minded people? Obviously, you're not a scientist.

As I said in one of my posts to you, we'll see what the future brings.

So go ahead with another bully post, it's obvious that it's all you've got.

69. Maybe
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 08:52 PM by Birthmark
But based on the discussions that I've read, I have to say that I'm much better informed on this topic than the average person. Not that that matters since reality doesn't depend upon my understanding of it. And AGW is reality.

Global warming isn't a meme. It is a fact. Either you don't know what a meme is or you don't know what science is.

No, I don't need credentials to agree with experts in a field. They have kindly done all the work on the subject that requires special training. Now, if I DISagree with the findings of the experts I'd better have one of two things --overwhelming evidence that they are wrong, or credentials to at least indicate that I know something about with what I'm disagreeing.

"People" think all kinds of things. Many of those thoughts are wrong, particularly when it relates to a scientific subject. However, the fact is that global cooling wasn't the prevailing view in the scientific literature. http://ams.confex.com/ams/pdfpapers/131047.pdf
http://www.skepticalscience.com/ice-age-predictions-in-1970s.htm

What people thought or think is of no scientific consequence in general, aside from some of the social sciences.

What people think about AGW is of no scientific consequence at all. It is, however, important politically. This is why denialists focus on persuading the populace rather than doing science. And why you keep playing the victim rather than dealing with the factual information. ;)

But I do have a serious question- this woman started by scoffing at "global warming" and proceeded to say that only a quarter of scientists believe in it. Then followed by saying it was a "wealth redistribution scheme"-

So here's my question- where are they getting this "wealth redistribution scheme" idea? I mean, what is the justification for this?

A few years ago my thermostat was busted and my house was either way too hot or way too cold. But eventually it was fixed and worked once again. This is what has been happening to our planet. What's amazing is there are things we can do to help prevent this thermostat from breaking or at least slowing it down but too many people would rather bury their head in the sand. Oh it's snowing in Florida - I guess Global Warming is fake. Geez, how clueless can someone get?

30. Nonsense climate theory
ought to be mocked and laughed at. Global Warming believers ("Warmers") twist every piece of information into something that supports their beliefs, and we end up with a theory that cannot be falsified because everything is evidence to support it.

With the majority of the human race across three continents suffering from historic cold, one would think that the Warmers would give us some temporary peace from their hallucinatory braying...

You apparently are laboring under the delusion that weather (which is what you whining about) is climate. That is simply not true.

By the way, take a look at this:

The weather in Greenland has been outrageously warm. I think they have my weather.

The rest of your conspiracy theory is silly and unsupported by reality, evidence, or common sense.

34. Yep, they don't realize that global warming refers to a very small increase ro
in atmospheric temperature. And yep, some places are supposed to get cold.

These idiots don't even realize that the Arctic ice is almost gone. I guess of course they don't care about that.

46. what Arctic ice is almost gone?
While the Artic ice reached a low in the summer of 2007, it
has been recovering for the past 2 years:

Who knows if this trend will continue. Of course it still
freezes back in the winter:

37. Yeah, I'm with you.
I'm a geoscientist, and deal with it a lot. Just remind them that scientists think about time, and rates of change, on a geologic time scale, and not their day to day experiences, haha.

40. a catastrophic 3 degree average warming ONLY mean avg 23 degree day is 26 degress - COLD
It's like your body running a temperature 3 degrees higher than normal. Might not seem like much, but makes a big difference anyway

41. The term is becoming a joke...
I hear it constantly the last month or so. "Hey, it just global warming'd 24 inches of snow on us", "Damn it's cold, must be global warming again", "where is this global warming nonsense when we need it".

The term climate change needs to be used ALWAYS. Ever having called it Global Warming was a terrible mistake.

Doesn't matter anyway in the near term. With the economy as bad as it is, American's are not going to be willing to sacrifice anything much for the environment. Without the US, there will be no serious binding deals like many hoped would come out of Copenhagen.

As long as Climate Change is referred to as Global Warming, it will be dismissed by the masses every time it snows or gets cold in their town. Not good considering the majority are already leery of sacrificing much to combat the problem anyway.

Also doesn't help when many point the finger at Climate Change every time there is a fire, a hurricane or a heat wave. Kinda hard to ridicule people for denying Climate Change any time it is cold if those whom understand the science all too often fall into the trap of doing the same kind of thing to bolster their argument.

48. and yet they say nothing when summers are unusually hot
I guess I could tolerate their ignorance a little more if they were at least a little consistent about it.

Seriously though, it's sad how few people take the time to learn the difference between weather and climate. These are not difficult concepts.

49. I'm really f***ing cold today and that is all that matters!
You DO realize that is all that matters--right? This all about ME and what I need, want, and think. What you think and how you are impacted means jack to me, because I got my stuff right here...

How'd I do? Can I "pass" if I go out among the dumb-asses spouting crap on climate change?

and we are certainly seeing xtreme climate changes in th US and around the globe. Al Gores movie, Inconvenient Truth, even talked about how certain parts of the world where going to see xtreme colder temperatures.

"Global warming" is a misnomer. The climate change means it is colder in the winter and hotter in the summer. The terminology needs to be correct.
