Hospital will fire employees who don't get flu shot
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston Area Medical Center employees who do not get the seasonal flu vaccine by the end of the day Friday are going to lose their jobs.

"The vaccine is a condition of employment" and people who do not get the vaccine will be fired, CAMC spokesman Dale Witte said.

Anyone who is not vaccinated by the end of the day Friday will not be allowed to work, Witte said.

"If they are scheduled to work, they will be taken off the schedule until the folks and others go over the list to make sure it's accurate," he said. "Then it will be termination."

A CAMC employee e-mailed the Gazette to say, "it looks like the decision to let 80 employees go because they refuse to take the vaccine is actually going to take place." The employee asked not to be identified.

2. The hospital needs to protect their vulnerable patients
and people can shed virus for up to a week before they get sick and up to a week after they feel well.

Any nurse who refuses to get vaccinated needs to find work away from patients.

I have no idea how anyone who survived nursing school can possibly be a vaccination whiner.

8. it does
That's why whiners are getting canned.

Funny, we used to form a circle and just jab each other down the line when the vaccine would first come in.

9. What about food service, central supply, laundry, cleaning crew, PT, RT, etc?
Anyone who comes in contact with anything that comes in contact with patients should be treated the same.

3. i know this sounds
outrageous but you can't have people who are asymptomatic but infectious moving around the halls and spreading the flu to patients who are already ill to whom the flu could be fatal.

14. they made it through nursing school and are still afraid of the shot?
seems that they didn't pay attention in class.

i'm not for forcing anyone to get a flu shot, but someone in the health care industry who still believes the nonsense spouted by the anti-vaxers is probably someone i don't want treating me.

the flu shot is safe and effective unless you're allergic to eggs.

They must've played hooky the day cancer was covered in nursing school.

17. that would be correct
if they were requiring the H1N1 shot, the article clearly states that this is for the seasonal flu.

26. Yep lets screw people you don't agree with
So very Liberal of you. I was forced to have flu shots while in the military. I would always be sick for a couple a months after wards. I have been retired for 12 years and not a flu shot since. The healthiest I've been and never contracted the flu.

30. I never got flu shots until about 15 years ago when I nearly died
of pneumonia as a secondary infection to the flu. That was after years of fighting bronchitis every winter due to various viruses and flus. I have gotten a pneumonia shot every 5 years and the flu shot every year since and haven't had so much as a minor cold.

We all have these stories on either side of the issue. But nurses have the responsibility not to spread the flu or any other disease to vulnerable people in their care. If a nurse can't even take precaution as minor as getting a flu shot to prevent patients in their care from getting sick then they need to be in another line of work. Hospitals and clinics are full of vulnerable people for whom catching the flu is a death sentence.

I care more about the vulnerable people in their care than the nurses who refuse shots. So if that's not enough to get Liberal credentials then too bad. They need to act like responsible adults. If they don't understand why the risk of downsides in their getting the shot doesn't even come close to the potential damage they very likely could cause by spreading, for all intents and purposes, a deadly disease to elderly, and seriously and critically ill patients they need to be shown the door.

27. Doesn't sound like rocket science; you work in a hospital and should be immunized.
Unless, of course you have some allergy to the shot.
