I saw two of the most asinine "Pro-life" bumper stickers today.
I was driving home today and the car in front me idled at a stoplight to let someone out. (I'm not a huge fan of that either.)

As I was sitting there, I leaned forward to get a look at the bumper-stickers. (I always read them, sometimes they're good for a laugh.)

This is what was on the bumper: "ABORTION IS LIKE MAGIC. IT MAKES BABIES DISAPPEAR!" and "ABORTION IS MEAN"

Really? That's it? Not even a bible quote or accusation of murder? Talk about phoning it in.

As I pulled into my parking lot I had the same thoughts I always do about people like that. Very few authoritarians are actually concerned about the causes they stump for.

Pro-lifers, anti-marriage activists, religious fundies, book-burners, gun-grabbers, censors.

For most of them it's not about abortion, religion, LGBT people, books, music, media, guns. It's about control. Simple as that. There are many people who are honestly concerned with an issue but for the others if it wasn't *PLACE ISSUE HERE* it would be something else.

BTW sticker-person, you know what's really "mean"? Taking away a person's rights!

1. Forgive me, but sometimes I wish I had a bumpersticker that read:
"A Miscarriage is God's Way of Murdering Babies"

11. That's great! I love it! But the comeback is always that
it's okay for God to murder babies. Really, that's what I always got back.

28. It's like George Carlin said -
"If there's a miscarriage, why don't they have a funeral? Why doesn't the census count fetuses? Why do people say "We have two children and one on the way" instead of "We have 3 children"?"

29. I am old enough to have just one word for the anti abortion crowd - "Coathanger"
And if they act like they don't know what I'm talking about I want to go medieval on their asses.

2. "If you can read this, thank the doctor who didn't abort you"
Edited on Fri Jan-08-10 08:48 PM by Richardo
Actual bumper sticker seen in Houston. I've never seen one stupider.

So I'm sending a thank-you note to every doctor in the world who was practicing medicine in 1956. It's a lot longer list than you'd think.

5. Aside from its stupidity
I see a more sinister message in that bumper sticker: abortion doctors are predators. It's not unlike the sentiment that compels murderous pigs like the one who killed Dr. George Tiller.

3. Reproductive choice is a balancing of interests, according to Roe.
The state's compelling interest in the life of the unborn increases and the mother's right of absolute dominion over her body diminishes as the pregnancy advances to term.

12. I've seen that one many times too.
The anti-choice people have mixed up their public base about the words choice and life.

15. I never quite got that bumper sticker.
Just because a woman has a child does not mean she is "pro-life". There are many women out there who have had abortions, but have also given birth to children. I personally know a woman who had an abortion as a teenager, then went on to give birth to five children. Giving birth to a child does not mean one is anti-abortion.

19. That's true.
My mom had a abortion in college. She had three children later in life.

Given how much she loves me, my sisters and her grandchildren; I'd say my mother is very, very pro-life/choice.

32. My mother didn't have a choice
I was born prior to 1972.

Actually, she did have a choice. She could lay on bed rest for four months until I was born, or she could have another miscarriage.

This is one I see often and it annoys the hell out of me. I always want to ask them, you were a former sperm too, do you think it should be illegal for males to masturbate? Won't someone please think of the SPERM?!? ;)

23. Neither of those bumper stickers advocated taking away anyone's rights
There are many who disapprove of abortion but do not favor making it illegal.

Kind of like the many DUers who criticize the Duggar family for having so many kids, but do not advocate taking away that couple's reproductive rights.

27. Driving around the rural parts of Iowa (or just about any state, I would imagine),
you see MANY signs erected (huh-huh) on farmland within easy view of the highway with an anti-abortion theme. The reasoning must go back multiple generations, with the "every sperm is sacred" mentality being the key to survival and prosperity of these farming families - every hand contributed to the productivity of the farm.

Of course, times change, and the sheer number of "farm hands" becomes a moot point with all of the mechanization. Old habits and attitudes just die hard, I would imagine.

30. One of the stupidest I've ever seen or heard was...
"I've noticed that everybody that is for abortion has already been born. "

courtesy of none other than Ronald Reagan.

Uhhhh...yeah... Fantastic logic there, Ronnie :eyes:

Oh, and one of the other ones that makes me roll my eyes is something like, being thankful our moms didn't have an abortion.

WTF??

If abortion had been legal back in 1952 and if my mom had had one, then I wouldn't be here to even give a shit, now would I?

I swear. Sometimes I wonder where their goddamned brains are.
