Saturday 09 January 2010

I've been writing about unbelievably bad news for more than a decade now, so when the New Year came around this time, I made up my mind to try and come up with something to write about that was optimistic, positive, more upbeat, or something. It's all been so grim for so long now, with recent events providing no exception - a less-than-half-a-loaf health care "reform" process, underwear bombers and a new nascent war in Yemen, the Afghan escalation, more suicide attacks in Iraq, bad housing stats, bankers running banking "reform" and a bunch of Congressional Democrats whose imminent retirement could put Congress back in the hands of the people who lined up behind George W. Bush like ducks on a pond, which matters less thanks to the stark level of spinelessness evinced by those aforementioned Democrats and their ilk - and the first chore I gave myself after the holidays was to turn that frown upside down.

Ha.

The term "blood from a stone" leaps nimbly to mind. I tried, for the better part of a week, to come up with something, some angle, to argue that all is not as bleak as it so readily seems. No soap. A lot of the air has gone out of the hope and change balloon, and as for the Left in general, well, let's just say disarray and despair are the most optimistic of outlooks lately. A lot of people seem to be stuck in the mud these days; progressive voters are furious with President Obama, Democratic voters are furious with progressive voters for being furious with President Obama, and everyone else is kind of standing around waiting for someone to get off the mark and start leading.

But then I remembered something.

I remembered how a halfwit Texan and his Supreme Court allies jobbed the electorate and snatched the presidency away from the rightful winner of the 2000 election, and two years later, parlayed their own failure to defend the homeland from terrorism into a push toward war in Iraq.

By comparison, the war in Vietnam had been churning along for many, many years before its opponents were able to organize public protests of any size or import. George W. Bush's Iraq debacle was still five months away from becoming a reality in October of 2002, but that didn't stop the Left from organizing one of the largest and most important antiwar protests in American history. Washington, DC, San Francisco, and cities all across the nation saw hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets on October 26 to stop a war that hadn't even started yet. I saw it. I was there.

In February of 2003, one month before the start of the Iraq war, the single largest protest in the history of humanity took place. Tens of millions of people in dozens of countries across the world spoke with one voice to say "No!" to Mr. Bush and his plans. The war happened anyway, because nothing short of God Herself denouncing Bush from the Capitol Dome was going to stop the damned thing, but what the Left accomplished before the war even started beggars likeness. I saw it. I was there.

The Left has a reputation, partially deserved, for being a motley collection of scatterbrained, cause-of-the-week, ego junkies who never really get anything done. But I saw what the Left was able to do when confronted with the criminal ambitions of the Bush administration, and it didn't stop after the war got going. Groups sprung up in every corner of the country and kept the heat on until they made a difference. Whatever one may think about the Democratic Party today, there is no doubt the fortunes of that party were turned in 2006 and 2008 because of the tireless efforts of millions of people to push popular opinion and understanding away from the yawning precipice of national neoconservatism.

So, here's what I think: do it again.

If you're disappointed in Mr. Obama, go back to your anti-Bush roots and put together some concerted activism. Organize a protest, or a letter-writing campaign or find a Congressional candidate you like and volunteer to help them. Raise money, raise issues and start pushing back against what you believe to be wrong. If you support Mr. Obama and the Democrats, get back on your '08 horse and ride to the rescue, because for sure they need all the help you can provide. Get back into the game, and stop being paralyzed and demoralized because politicians aren't doing the right thing.

The Left has done some truly amazing things in the last ten years, things that took great effort, concentration, passion and will. The need for those qualities did not evaporate with the election of the "good guys." Indeed, those qualities are needed more than ever before.

I wanted to write about some good news for the New Year. That good news? You faced harder challenges than this before, and can do it again. As Congressman Dennis Kucinich said many times, you are the one you've been waiting for. He was right. I saw it. I was there. So were you.

Go.

of pouting and whining and berating eachother instead of fighting together for what one believes, than our future is bound to become as bad if not worse than it was during the 1999 to 2008 debacable..

In my opinion I have seen this in play before..good cop, bad cop, all politicians are the same, la la la......it began in 1998 with a vengence..and look what 2000 got us when some allowed the din to overshadow self reason....should send up red flags to many in how similar this all is, talk about dejevu...

Wrong.

I do appreciate your sentiment, tho.

http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Dissent/Resolutions_Resistance.html

Resolutions as Resistance

(anti-USA Patriot Act resolutions)

by Jessica Azelay
March 2003

...
In response to the obvious flouting of democracy and the bill of rights, several city councils across the U.S. have made some important resolutions of their own.

These resolutions differ in content and strength. Some assert opposition to unilateral U.S./UK military action against Iraq and demand cooperation with the United Nations while many condemn a war on Iraq altogether. The Santa Cruz resolution not only opposes war, but also argues against continuing the non-military economic sanctions that have been strangling Iraq since 1990. The resolution passed in Syracuse, New York "urges the people of Syracuse to exert efforts to convince the President not to unilaterally initiate any war."

The reasons that councilors give for their resolutions are many and they reflect the depth and diversity of objections that people have to the possible war on Iraq. In New Haven, for instance, councilors raise concerns that "committing American troops to Iraq will put in harm's way citizens of New Haven, a disproportionate number of them racial and ethnic minorities from our city's most economically deprived neighborhoods." The Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania resolution states that killing "innocent Middle Eastern people, including Muslims, will widen the gorge between people of different races and religions rather than nurturing a union of humanity here and abroad." Many resolutions cite potential destabilization in the Middle East and the failure of President Bush to present convincing evidence of Iraq's threat to the United States as reasons to oppose the national war drive. Some call attention to the connections between war and domestic policy, pointing out that the budgetary casualties of war will be much-needed social programs and calling out the president and Congress for ignoring problems at home or attempting to cover them up with a war.

Though copies of the resolutions have been sent to President Bush, State Representatives, and the United Nations, city councils do not have real authority in the international arena. Their decisions cannot directly interrupt the government's plans for war. Instead, antiwar resolutions can serve as a vehicle for public education, media outreach, and building relationships between community groups. Activists in cities all over the United States are working to make themselves visible, widen the debate, and reach a broad range of people. When activists put together an antiwar resolution and submit it to a city council, they move the discussion to their conversational turf. It enables them to promote ideas on their terms, putting the opposition on the defensive.

N.Y. City Council Passes Anti-Patriot Act Measure
By Michelle Garcia

Special to The Washington Post
Thursday, February 5, 2004; Page A11

NEW YORK, Feb. 4 -- New York City, site of the country's most horrific terrorist attack, Wednesday became the latest in a long list of cities and towns that have formally opposed the expanded investigatory powers granted to law enforcement agencies under the USA Patriot Act.

The New York City Council approved a resolution condemning the law, enacted by Congress six weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, with a voice vote in its chambers a few blocks from the gaping hole at Ground Zero.

"The Patriot Act is really unpatriotic, it undermines our civil rights and civil liberties," said council member Bill Perkins (D-Manhattan), the bill's sponsor. "We never give up our rights that's what makes us Americans."

Waxman piles on Progressive Caucus support for Blue Dog facing Progressive primary challeng

Very disappointing to see Waxman smear someone like Marcy Winograd. But as the article says, if Winograd succeeds, she would be the first progressive to defeat a Blue Dog. We have to start somewhere. I don't know what Harman's chances are in the election, but I can't imagine she still has any progressive support left.

We have to start somewhere ... this seems like an opportunity to say 'no' to at least one Blue Dog.

Excellent article and that is what I'm working towards. There aren't any local races that hold my interest but I'm branching out. I will send money to one of the races where we can ditch a Blue Dog in the primary and the rest of my money goes to DFA and ACLU. I spent some time pissed (Okay, I'm not quite through with that but it's likely because I'm also pissed at the PTB where I work. Bleed over) and now I'm back on the horse. My pissed off point of view says that the PTB want us to feel disillusioned and helpless. I won't give them the satisfaction.

The ongoing griping about President Obama by so many on DU lately gets tiring and is quite useless.

And, I hope people on here honestly do contrast the horrible Bush era with Obama's leadership and overall approach to policy and then do something about it other than hiding behind a keyboard. For me, I'm supportive for the most part and focus on the good that has been done. There are times when I get angry about the DoJ's defense of doma or something equally as awful, and I will react to that.

But I post my two cents and move on. Some people pride themselves on a seemingly endless well of angst that they must post about so everyone knows just how they feel.

42. Good post. Good, too, are the LEGITIMATE COMPLAINTS about Obama's obeisance to corporate interests.
We must COMPLAIN and NOT be complacent. We must redirect our money away from the DNC and DSCC and toward PROGRESSIVE candidates, and movements, and publications. WE MUST FIGHT FOR WHAT WE BELIEVE IN and not rely on FAITH-BASED POLITICS (like the opposition we roundly deride).

I think the WORST disservice is done by those who cheer lead and make endless excuses for profoundly corrupt and destructive policies - bailouts for the banksters, an illogical and possibly illegal expansion of war in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Yemen, this absurd sham of a health industry giveaway, continued domestic spying, continued renditions, LIES AND MORE LIES.

Thanks for the exhortation. We have just begun to fight.

44. Will, we need a new Poor People's March
Thanks to 8 years of Bush-O-Nomics and the continued control of our government and our economy by greedy corporations, the middle class has made zero gains in the past decade, and there are more poor and homeless in our country than ever. There are fewer job opportunities, more unemployed, and more homeless.

Maybe it's time for us to do another march on Washington based on the concept that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King had when he organized a Poor People's March on Washington in 1968. He didn't live long enough to see it, and the march was messed up by heavy rains and then the tragic death of Bobby Kennedy. But the idea is still sound.

Maybe the poor, the homeless, the foreclosed-upon, the jobless and others injured by the Bush misadministration and the big banks and corporations need to show up by the hundreds of thousands in Washington and demand that the government take care of its people as well as its corporations.

45. :thumbs up: Now we just need a way
to ORGANIZE it. Take the lead into action.

Eloquent words are a good start, but without the vital next step (Action), a clearly led place to start, many of us will just go, "Yeah, what you said!!!" with passionate agreement and then go back to the daily salt mines.

Groups like MoveOn and Color of Change seem to know how to communicate with and organize huge groups of people.

Any experienced cat herders out there?

49. Unfortunately, This Time, the Democrats Are Against Us, As Well.
It was far easier to act en mass when the left (and the rest of the world) was united against Bush. Bush was rather universally despised by most every rational person in the country from at least 2002 on. Even those people, still blinded by the rubble from 9/11, who bought into the lies about WMD (but, even more, were just looking to make someone PAY), weren't so much pro-Bush as they were pro-America. Consequently, when it became obvious that our reasons for invading Iraq were a sham, they eagerly rushed to join those who had been against the war from the start, and there were millions of voices raised in protest for years.

Today, things are very different. Today, policies that were booed under Bush are cheered by the people who had previously booed the loudest. We've crawled out of the wreckage of the Bush years to find that the mindless ideologues are still with us, only know they chant "Obama! Obama!" instead of "Bush! Bush!" Far, FAR too many Democrats don't care WHAT Obama does. They only care that he's a Democrat.

That leaves the progressive Democrats (the thinking half of the party), and the progressive unaffiliates trying to make their voices heard not just above the babble of the Republican sheep, but the Democratic sheep as well.

I marched in Washington for equality in October, and when I logged onto DU the very next day, I was confronted with a chorus of people accusing me and my fellow marches of being a distraction, of wanting ponies, of trying to undermine the administration. These were people who claimed to be allies of the GLBT community under Bush, who commiserated with us about the bleak outlook for equality in those days. After Obama was elected, we found that their loyalty wasn't to us, it was to the Democratic party. They didn't care at all for the cause of the equality. They were only concerned that the man in the White House was a Democrat.

Yes, we will continue to fight, and we will continue to raise our voices. But the solidarity we had under Bush is gone, and will never be regained as long as Obama is in the White House.

51. As A Liberal & A Boomer, I Say... Let's UNITE Again! I Have No Idea
how to get anything off the ground and I live in a state and county that makes almost impossible to gather a group for much of anything Liberal!

There must be people here who have the "know how" to get "something" started! I remember well many marches way back when, and those that got good coverage! I also remember several I attended that got no more than a blip when thousands & thousands of us marched in D.C.! The last one I went to was in March of 2005 and there were thousands there, but so little coverage!

Today the Tea People with far less in attendance get GREAT COVERAGE!! How can there be much "good news" when that's WHAT the NEWS IS??

I've become disappointed, disillusioned and cynical with NO OUTLET other than here to vent! I've tried all the usual means of communicating with no real results from ANY of my Congress Critters! I know it's not a healthy way to live my life, but I feel not to face reality is worse!

Maybe not... they say "ignorance is bliss" and "they" may be correct!

said "we are the ones we've been waiting for" in his Feb. 2008 Chicago campaign speech.
