I Confronted A WalMart Door Greeter this Morning

Wal Mart just opened a Super BigBox store in the city I live last week....this morning out of curiosity I decide to go lurk around.

1. A letter-to-the-editor would've probably been more productive.
The greeter was misinformed, but not really deserving having your undivided attention for what was apparently several minutes. The manager is a corporate dude, but so what - he probably didn't want to waste his time trying to convince you to shop at Walmart.

You could still do a very effective LTTE, based on your story.

13. Add in my vote.
Well, it's "morale" but when it comes to Wal-Mart, "moral" isn't always off-kilter either... :(

Just wait until costco is knocked out... prices will go up. It's WM's MO. Definitely get that into the LTTE as well.

Costco, I mean. But it's not a big deal...not like you're maybe stealing something...just what they do.

I know I'm not the only customer who's so well known that I don't need to pull out my Costco card until I hit the checkstand...unless the person on the door is new.

At my Walmart the greeters may stop and chat with you for a few minutes if it's not too busy...and they only check your outgoing stuff if the alarm goes off.

But there's NO WAY Walmart's gonna put Costco out of business in this town.

Pretty good story, but please forgive me for not believing a word of it, other than that maybe the greeter said "Have a great day". Story is just a wee bit too perfect and I couldn't even begin to see such a lengthy and perfectly role played conversation actually happening at the exit of a walmart. Also could never in a million years see one of the greeters going off about how they're trying to put Costco out of business etc..

Hey, may I'm wrong, But I just didn't get the slightest vibe at the end of it all that the story was real in any way, even though it was well told and written. To each their own perception of it I guess.

Given that every employees meeting at Wal-Mart is supposed to include the "Wal-Mart Cheer", is it so difficult to believe the Ass Mgr might add, "and we're gonna put that Costco down the street right out of business!!!!"

94. And where would the greeter have gotten that information?

OPERATIONMINDCRIME was skeptical about your claim that the greeter said this. I don't know if s/he was skeptical that the greeter would know about such plans or just that the greeter would share such plans. I was painting a picture of a Wal-Mart staff, sorry, "associate" meeting with its rah-rah nonsense.

I believe this demonstrates why it is not unlikely that a greeter would know what you claim the greeter said. It also illustrates the mindset Wal-Mart attempts to instill in their staff that would lead to the greeter bragging about their aim to bring down Costco.

I was addressing OPERATIONMINDCRIME's skepticism with known Wal-Mart tactics supporting your claim.

97. I agree with ieoeja
This part of the story is absolutely plausible. Probably, at some point during the process of opening the store/indoctrinating the employees, some prick from Bentonville arkansas showed up and explained the whole thing to all the employees. Does that make sense? Probably not, I'm sure most WalMart employees don't drink the Kool-Aid (the ones at my wal Mart across the street certainly don't act like they give a rat's ass, much less a damn about Wal Mart's corporate success). Anyway, in the documentaries on Wal-Mart, they are always depicted as very open with regard to their monopolistic intentions/pretensions, to the point of including all employees in on such things at meetings. One Wal-Mart cheer from years ago, back when their target was small-town America and not Costco, went like this: "Price 'em low/ Stack 'em high/ Watch those downtown merchants cry."

Anyway, the story does ring true. Wal-Mart has a scary, totalitarian ideology. Unlike most corporations, they are very open about their overall intention to crush their competitors, damn the consequences--unlike most of them, however, they really push the idea that doing so represents a victory for the little guy.

99. You're Entitled. I Don't Buy It For A Second. Not Even One.
In fact, though it contained everything that those who are strongly against walmart would want to hear, I found it incredibly improbable that such a conversation would ever take place with the greeter of a walmart. That's not to say that there is no chance this happened. I just consider it to be highly improbable and will remain 99.99% skeptical.

57. Here you go. Took a few Find/Replace runs to get it
legible.

Wal-Mart just opened a Supercenter store in the city I live last week. This morning, out of curiosity, I decided to go and lurk around.

On my way out the door, the Greeter wished me a great day. I thanked him and told him the store was HUGE. he the started rambling about how the store is the largest in the Northwest and it was built in record time and that they expected more growth around the property including a Carl's Jr. and several other fast food restaurants, the T.L.E had 7 bays, and that they will soon have 30 gas pumps at the entrance of the store.

Then he said something very stupid. He said that Wal-Mart opened up this store to put Costco out of the gas business and to close the store down. I said "YOU'RE KIDDING ME, RIGHT?” He said "NO". I asked, "How are you going to do that?” He said, "With lower gas prices." I replied, "You will have to sell it for about a $1.50 a gal and absorb the loss in the price of your store product," and then I said, "You won't be able to put Costco out of business."

He asks why. I said "DIFFERENT CLIENTELE and a different business philosophy." He asks "how so?" I said, "They sell bulk items. They sell more name brands that are higher quality and they specialize in customer service. They have an untarnished good name. The Costco management supports their UNION EMPLOYEES and allows them to have a union shop. WAL-MART doesn't!"

I asked him if he received the Wal-Mart anti-union speech as part of the training process. He said management told them during training that they were better off without a union. I asked him what the consequences were for talking PRO-UNION. Termination, he replied. I asked him if that was fair, and about that time, the assistant manager walks around the corner and asks if everything was all right.

He asks what's with the talk of UNIONS. I said, "I was just telling your employee that the store you plan on putting out of business down the street allows their employees to organize and have a UNION to represent them. Your store doesn't and your employees are not even allowed to entertain it without suffering consequences." The manager said that unions drive the prices of products up and morale is lower.

I said, "You're wrong. Costco sells the same appliances for the same price as you do and the morale of their employees is one of ownership. Anything that is higher in price, people don't mind paying it because Costco stands behind their product, even after it has been used for a long period."

He then said that their store has improved the quality of life in the community because now more people are now working. He said they would employ about 250 people after the grand opening is done. Then, I asked what the average hourly wage was. He then dismissed his employee and said it is higher than fast food wages. I then said, "Is $7.75" (that's what they advertised in the paper) "an hour enough to live on with an average 23 hour work week? Not all of the employees are from my city. The average Costco employee starts at $12.50 an hour and Costco's earnings are nowhere near Wal-Mart’s. Costco employees haven't had to stand in line at the welfare office for medical benefits."

He then fiddled with his cell phone and magically it rang. He excused himself to take care of some business.

Geez. I hope the greeter still has his job.

There's a quick attempt at paragraphing for legibility, not for related grouping. No time to fix the tenses.

that had his job outsourced to India, Taiwan or somewhere else.

It is sad that in some places, only Wal-Mart is hiring at $7.75 and there are no other jobs paying even that. Geez, the McDonald's in my neighborhood hires for $10.25 per hour.

in his mid-fifties, who likely got this job as an act of desperation.

Then you post a wild run on sentence about the experience with the closing line "
Geez I hope the greeter still has his job.....", which comes off sort of hollow and insincere.

Hmmm, sounds like a giant waste of time if you ask me. Unless you had to buy something, there are alternative ways to get exercise to wandering around a Wal-Mart.

46. I don't think the OP was being rude to the greeter in any way
Edited on Mon Jan-29-07 07:12 PM by fujiyama
and I don't really think it was a confrontation. In fact, the OP may have done one good thing - and educate the greeter about the better wages COSTCO is offering. The manager sounded like an idiot.

But it was still a waste of time. And either way, getting into a "debate" over wages with an employee there is not productive. Also, it's unlikely the man is working there because he wants to. I think it would have been better for the OP to consider his position, and risk making it looking like the man was not doing his job, thus putting his job in jeopardy. Why go wonder around a Wal Mart in the first place? I avoid the damn store like the plague and have stepped foot in them maybe twice. But I also have alternatives, which I realize are not available to many.

29. Not much of a confrontation. You should have written "educated".
I think the assistant manager probably excused himself to go find out if Costco is hiring.
$12.50 v $7.75 as starting pay. The greeter will probably be checking out Costco as well.

54. You know why?
Because people are paid so little they have to go where they can make their dollar go the furthest! It's elitist and rude to call them sheeple. When you're as poor as a lot of people, you have no choice but to go to walmart to do your best to make ends meet. Makes me wonder if the people who always say this stuff about people who shop at walmart have ever been poor and struggling in their lives.

32. Why the hell *confront* some poor guy earning a buck?
If your goal is to assist the Walmart employees, why not print out a fact sheet and plaster it around the Walmart? Hand out a few dozen Costco job applications everytime you visit Walmart?

It sounds like you ranted at some poor man trying to put food on the table. That aside, KNOWING Walmart's business practices, what were YOU doing shopping there?

It is time for people to pull their heads out of their asses and quit believing everything they are told.

Wal-Mart doesn't give a f*ck about its employees. Just the mention of a union sends them into a frenzy.

Thank you for speaking out.

41. Since you're getting a bit slammed on the spacing of your post ...
When you post something long like that, click on "Preview" and see what it looks like before you click "Post Message." Your message window remains open at the bottom of the page and you can fix it.

Truthfully, it's very hard to read, and a lot of people will forego reading a post that is constructed with all the text so densely packed.

:)

59. What is so ironic about this piece is that I don't believe
that this greeter spoke to the poster like that.

We have had a change-agent in my office for about 2 months, does my company take his recommendations?

That remains to be seen.

The change-agent is a German citizen living in The Netherlands, do you know what his next gig is?

Wal-mart in Bentonville, AK.

The change-agent doesn't shop at Wal-Mart either, he dislikes the employment practices. So what kinds of changes can he suggest for Wal-Mart? And does Wal-Mart bite? I would love to be a change-agent.

I am with the change-agent, I haven't stepped in a Wal-Mart since 1999. But I work with drones and they always clamor about the prices, sheesh, what kinds of drugs are they on? On any given day, there are lots of products that Wal-Mart does not sell at rock bottom pricing, but those items are the most dusty.

61. I haven't posted in awhile
I'm a hit and run poster. (Was that tacky? Oh well.) I'm kinda scratching my head at some of these replies. I don't know where the OP is from or where the repliers are from (not clicking on all those profiles). Aside from a lamentable lack of punctuation knowledge though, this just doesn't seem that unbelievable to me. Maybe because I don't have a Costco or a Target or Trader Joe's so I'm stuck with Winn Dixie and Walmart. I live in a small city, my hubsband is in the only police dept union in the state of Alabama, my district votes about 73% Rep, and we're Southern so people run their mouths. Everywhere. With complete strangers. And the anti-union attitude? It's ugly out there, man. I've had conversations with Walmart greeters about many things. Not unions, but it could happen and I'm betting, knowing my area, they would come down on the anti side. That's a real shame since most of them are past retirement and working. A union might have prevented that. And should an adult who's stupid enough to work a pissant job and who is vocally anti-union not be called on it?? Cry me a river. Now I live in an economically disadvantaged area. I understand the need to take what jobs are available and shop where it's necessary. Hell, I got 3 kids and a husband to feed. I understand about that. What I don't understand, and what I won't stand by and not challenge, is the corporate anti-union mantra. It's one thing for them to say it. I get that--they want to make more money. But an employee who is screwed over by these policies? I expect someone with a little age to have better sense.

I am puzzled by many of the posts who think he/she was hard on this worker.

Thats how conversations happen. You start taking and they say something that blows your mind and then you put your chit chat hat on. Sounds like the employee's eyes were open a little bit. It never hurts to stir the pot a little bit, especially when you get a big nasty corporations people riled up.

Good Job!

She really needed some things and she's on a very fixed budget.

I told her I would NOT be going in with her and she asked why. So I told her. She was curious and said she agreed that Walmart was terrible, but she had no choice.

When she came out, she said she had asked the cashier how she like working there. The cashier said it sucked and the pay was terrible but that SHE had no choice but to work there.

Walmart - a benefit for the poor as well as creator of poor people.

In albuquerque they opened up a Sams club right next to a costco that has been in that location for years. I guess this is their new business philosophy, try to run the people that take care of their employees out of town. Then again I guess that has always been their philosophy.
