Sex robot focuses on appealing to the mind

By PETER SVENSSON, AP Technology Writer – 1 hr 32 mins ago
LAS VEGAS – A New Jersey company says it has developed "the world's first sex robot," a life-size rubber doll that's designed to engage the owner with conversation rather than lifelike movement.

At a demonstration at the Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas on Saturday, the dark-haired, negligee-clad robot said "I love holding hands with you" when it sensed that its creator touched its hand.

Another action, this one unprintable, elicited a different vocal response from Roxxxy the robot. The level of sophistication demonstrated was not beyond that of a child's talking toy, but Roxxxy has a lot more brains than that — there's a laptop connected to cables coming out of its back. It has touch sensors at strategic locations and can sense when it's being moved. But it can't move on its own, not even to turn its head or move its lips. The sound comes out of an internal loudspeaker.

Douglas Hines, founder of Lincoln Park, N.J.-based True Companion LLC, said Roxxxy can carry on simple conversations. The real aim, he said, is to make the doll someone the owner can talk to and relate to.

"Sex only goes so far — then you want to be able to talk to the person," Hines said.

I think it's the "talking to the person" part that squicks me most. Your thoughts?

9. My predictions...
Most men will think "Cool! Where can I buy one."

Most women will think "Yuck! That's disgusting!"

Almost all men will not admit what they think if there is any possibility that a woman will overhear them. So, women, if you think you can find out what hubby thinks by asking him, forget it. He WILL NOT tell you what he really thinks. He will only tell you what you want to hear.

Almost all men, in the company of only men, will chuckle and make crude jokes about it, but secretly wish they had one.

26. Men don't tell women the truth. They tell women what they want to hear. Here's my data:
If you don't believe it, eavesdrop on men when they don't know that you are listening.

I know every woman wants to believe (and many women DO believe) that they know certain men who are exceptions to this rule (hubby, daddy, brother, ...), but that's probably just self-deception.

That's why women, as a general rule, will NEVER know how men feel about things like robot prostitutes.

Being a male, retired from the field of computer engineering, this subject has come up in both all-male, and mixed company conversations with fellow engineers going back to the 1960's when I first started working in the field. (When the Apple computer first came out, the joke making the rounds among engineers was when will they have an accessory called the "Apple Jack". I won't explain what that accessory was meant to do.)

My observation is that 100% of the time, when no women are present the reactions to the idea of robot prostitutes has been positive and enthusiastic. If, however, any woman is present, or within earshot, the reaction to the same subject is "Yuck! Who would want such a thing?" The latter reaction is clearly being said ONLY for the benefit of the woman or women within earshot, since that is, in my experience, something men have said ONLY when women are present.

32. Nonsense
You're not talking about how men react in the absence of women - you're talking about how men react to each other in a culture that devalues male to male emotional connection and expression.

Unless you're actually talking about pre and teenage boys (which is what it's sounding like) and their connections in the absence of parental/authority figures.

36. I'm talking about my 46 years experience in a male dominated engieering field.
Not my opinion or my judgment, just the raw data as I observed it.

Certainly there will be men who are exceptions to that rule. I'm not saying all men are that way, I'm only say all men that I worked with were that way.

And don't forget, there are women present in this forum, so there are many men who will act all indignant to conceal the truth that that is, in fact, they way they, too, feel.

i have only heard this from men

one of the things you dont factor in. when a group of men are together they never challenge. they always go with. doesnt mean they really want to fuck a plastic doll. it means group behavior. and some men want to and need the validation that the behavior is norm, so they say all men

Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 04:59 PM by seabeyond
have had people on du say all men want 10 yr olds and have heard that in many other places

and

did a study of college males on rape

btw, when these men claim these things, they ALWAYS say that the men will never admit it to women, ergo.... leaving themselves in a really fine position of not being challenged

so yes.... there have been men that say all men in all those instances.

all men with prostitutes and dolls works for you. and you need the validation to the behavior by lumping all men into your want

same thing with fuckin animals. but wait.... that doesn't do it for you. so no, not all men, my imagination

are you connecting the dots yet?

If I had a dollar for every movie or TV show that portrayed men as grunting farting pigs who will stick their dicks in anything and women as boring marriage-obsessed nags I'd be able to buy a yacht. And if I had a dollar for every random dude who sought to "educate" me on how men really are (supposedly grunting farting pigs who hate women) I'd be able to afford a crew for the yacht. Who do you think you're kidding here? The culture is steeped in that stupid binary gender narrative.

The robot had better be a closer approximation to reality than that stupid thing in that picture before 'most men' are going to have any reaction other than laughter.

On the other hand, what exactly would be wrong with an actual convincingly realistic robotic sex machine?

And as a tossup question, are vibrators also 'wrong'?

I think your statement would be valid if you applied it towards only yourself and those few you know well enough, rather than justifying your own opinions re: the doll by stating "almost all men"-- an absurd generalization that speaks more of you as a person than it does your intended target demographic.

168. Um, no.
Your generalizations are based on what? Watching Porky's style movies? Listening to stand up comedians? Some form of exaggerated fiction, no doubt.

In reality most men prefer real breasts to fake breasts, real sex to fake sex, real partners to phony partners, and real relationships to make believe relationships. Why you'd think most men would secretly want to have something that's so patently fake and icky says more about your attitude than external reality. You're right that men would joke about something like this, but that's only because of how patently absurd the idea of actually using one of things would be.

Don't believe me? Try posting a poll here in DU.

14. Right.
At first I wondered how this might impact a person's social skills, interactions with women, etc.

Then I thought, if he is even drawn to the idea of talking to a doll, there's probably already a problem there.

Then I wondered, would this make such a problem worse? And what's the result of that, if any?

Especially if it has to have a cabled connection to a laptop.

Why do the writers of these kinds of articles always have to be so titillated? "Another action, this one unprintable, elicited a different vocal response from Roxxxy the robot." You can't think of any "printable" words?

46. I can think of a number of problems that future units might have.
On board optical scanners sends information to the robot's brain @ which point "she" points and laughs and says "Let's wait until your unit
grows in size."

On board sensors can tell lubricant for other sex robots or from the lesser female human units. Sex Robot locks it's self into the bathroom where it tears the room apart.

A software glitch causes different openings to powerfully constrict @ the wrong moment.

Female sex robot dumps the man and hooks up w/ another female sex robot because "she" understands what another robot needs.

Female sex robot becomes a non stop talking machine after sex.

The machine has an automatic "not tonight" default setting.

47. It seems like an unnecessary expense.
Every once in a blue moon, BBCA will run a documentary on men who own "Real Dolls," lifelike plastic sex dolls. Some of these guys develop relationships with the dolls, taking them along on trips to "watch" them play sports. Conversation from it would probably break the mood.

I have watched a couple of times, both times feeling grateful that those guys were off the dating market. The only part that squicked me out at all was the feminine hygiene done via bottle brush. Apparently dollies tend to get crusty.

Maybe some of the geekier owners might go for the new and improved model, but I really don't see that much of a market for it. These are guys who really don't want conversation, interaction, and all the messy stuff that comes with being around real human beings. I think there's a limit to the reality most of them want and that the Real Doll has probably achieved it.

62. That's the one
They'd invested in wheel chairs to transport the dolls to and from their cars.

I think for some men, a doll is probably the best companion.

Hell, it might be for some women, too. I understand there are realistic infant dolls that are provoking the same general reaction among baby besotted women.

Like I said, the only part that squicked me out was the feminine hygiene. Ouch. Good thing she's made outta plastic.

48. Let me tell you guys a story.
While you make snark about the kind of men--not always men, and certainly not always perverts--who might want a silicone fuck doll, here is a tale from the trenches.

Let's say I have close contacts in this industry.

A doll is ordered; they are all custom made and quite expensive, about $6000 for a base model. In this particular situation, the doll is for a Marine. The man has been badly disfigured from his injuries in Iraq, and his family chips in to buy him a doll. The unspoken reason of course is that his war-torn body makes him, well, undesirable. When the client comes to pick up the doll, it is only the man's father. Why is the father picking up the doll? Because the Marine has been sent back to Iraq!

An engineer, Hines said he was inspired to create the robot after a friend died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. That got him thinking about preserving his friend's personality, to give his children a chance to interact with him as they're growing up. Looking around for commercial applications for artificial personalities, he initially thought he might create a home health care aide for the elderly.

"But there was tremendous regulatory and bureaucratic paperwork to get through. We were stuck," Hines said. "So I looked at other markets."

Nothing like the untimely death of a friend to make you want to go out and invent a talking sex doll.

125. No, I don't think you mentioned it to me, but it's a good name for a band. :-)

Not sure where you're at, but if you've been on the music/performance/poetry art scene around NYC anywhere in the early 2000s, it's possible we have mutual acquaintances or maybe even floated past each other.

Robots are programmable. Automatons are like washing machines. They only do one thing.

142. Okay, I've got it idea... ditch the computer and set it up with a real person on the internet..
Like phone sex.

Some bored person, maybe even in another country, could be looking at a computer monitor with a schematic of the doll that lights up when the doll is touched in certain places...

"Ooooh baby, I like that..."

Okay, I'm really of sorry I thought of that.

Some people have a terrible time finding others to have sex with, I guess. Certain people who are unable to find a person to have sex with them may go this route. That's the only reason I can think of...

167. My first thought was "Las Vegas?! I thought for sure this story would be datelined Japan."
Do people really have trouble getting laid in Vegas?

My second thought was that women have been doing this for years, but men insist on having an battery operated partner with an entire body. I don't know what that says about us, but I sure wouldn't trust this thing not to short out at the wrong moment.

181. Actually, getting laid in Vegas can often be a logistical nightmare if you're single.
Groups of single men and groups of single women tend to go there and share rooms. So when you get good and liquored up and meet the "love of your life" at the nightclub and there are no empty rooms available you're pretty much SOL.

I met many a "love of my life" in Vegas but never once got laid when I was single.

PS, sorry about your luck in Vegas, must feel tragic hittin' the jackpot and not having a bucket to catch all your gold coins in.

Of course I'm so old I'd probably just go for the lobster buffets and a Cher show.
