Palin believes it was 'God's plan' for McCain to choose her, strategist says
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 08:26 PM by pepperbear
Sarah Palin believed that Sen. John McCain chose her to be his running mate in the 2008 presidential race because of "God's plan," according to a top political strategist in the Arizona Republican's campaign.

In an interview with the CBS news magazine "60 Minutes," Steve Schmidt described Palin as "very calm -- nonplussed" after McCain met with her at his Arizona ranch just before putting her on the Republican ticket. McCain had planned to name Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) as his choice until word leaked, sparking what Schmidt called political blowback over selecting the 2000 Democratic vice presidential nominee.

Schmidt said he asked Palin about her serenity in the face of becoming "one of the most famous people in the world." He quoted her as saying, "It's God's plan." Palin has not ruled out a run for the presidency.

3. I agree with Sarah
God picked her to be McCain's running mate because God wanted to make sure that the fucking GOP and their stinky ass hate and lies and ugliness would not occupy the White House for the next eight years (starting in January 2009.) There is nothing mysterious in the way God works Sarah. He hates you like I do.

It was all part of God's plan to increase awareness of the incompetence of the McCain/Palin ticket.

Of course it was God's plan... to make them lose. God isn't stupid!

God's Plan can be anything in hindsight. Sarah Palin is labeling the past as "God's plan". Easy to do after it'a already happened. Any fool can do that. She's just a fool with a forum in the media.

FWIW I was once a believing Christian and am very familiar with the whole thought process ALTHOUGH I don't believe my point was entirely false. If you can believe in a God who knows the number of the hairs on your head, who knows where else your logic might fail?

33. I'm a believer in Free Will, myself. Drink coffee or go herbal tea,it's your choice.Mother Teresa or
... Adolf Hitler -- you choose.

Or, inside your mythology, Adam and Eve had free will, unlike the animals. When God told them to leave "that tree" alone, they chose to disobey him.

Inside my mythology, I say they chose to become adults and learn the difference between good and evil. But either way, they had a choice.

Too much of "God's plan" and all you have is mechanistic predestination and no hope of change.

Welcome to DU and thanks for the opportunity to discuss theology.

45. From page 3: "she kept confusing Joe Biden's name with Obama's, calling him "O'Biden." "
Oh dear.

They flew her to McCain's ranch in Arizona. Schmidt said he took over the debate prep and simplified it. And Palin began doing well, except for one persistent problem: she kept confusing Joe Biden's name with Obama's, calling him "O'Biden."

"It was a verbal tic. And it was subconscious. But when you had gone through the Tina Fey parodies, you certainly cannot be in a position where you walk out onto the stage and refer to him repeatedly on national television as 'Senator O'Biden.' It would have just been devastating beyond words," Schmidt said.

55. I must confess that I have had occasional "verbal tics" myself ...
generally calling someone by another person's name because that person possesses a characteristic or mannerism that triggers a false relationship. It bothers me and I am always terribly embarrassed and ashamed about it, especially if the name raises memories of hurtful experiences for person being addressed, rather than simply being an embarrassing slip of the tongue. But sometimes it just happens in spite of my best efforts. It has never happened in anywhere near such an important context nor do I put the two names together, however. Thank God! But since I know that I also have this tendency, I've thought about what might have caused the trigger for Sarah.
Schmidt said that it was the confusion of Obama's name with Biden's and perhaps that is what it was. But the names are really nothing alike and there doesn't seem to be an obvious characteristic or mannerism between the two, apart from being intelligent, attractive and personable men, Democrats, and politicians.
It might actually have been that Joe is an Irish Catholic, hence "O'Biden" ....
Ah well, enough time wasted on that! But I love that at least one "O'Biden" slipped out during the debate, in spite of the patently cutesy "Kin I call ya 'Joe'?" question.
