Simple Weapon against Bank Robberies: Put GPS Inside Stolen Cash
Simple Weapon against Bank Robberies: Put GPS Inside Stolen Cash

Bank robberies could become a thing of the past if financial institutions follow the lead of those in Illinois. Two years ago, banks in that state began inserting GPS tracking devices into bundles of bills, and since then, robberies have declined. The tracking devices were credited for foiling a bank robbery on December 30 in Calumet City, after three men made off with $9,000 from TCF Bank. A credit-card-sized GPS slipped between some bills led police directly to the suspects shortly after the heist.

11. That's exactly what happens in a scene from the movie Thief, 1981....
...with James Caan. He was eluding some crooked cops so he put the tracking device on a bus headed for Des Moines, Iowa. ;)

Steal money

Run to nearest convenience store.

Stick money in microwave.

Nuke for 5 seconds, frying GPS circuitry.

Rob C-store.

14. GPS is a receive only standard. The person who wrote this is a tech MORON.
I had this argument months ago here.

The card used either has been made up as a rumor to discourage robbery or it is some other tech than GPS.

look, the guy didn't know what he was talking about or left out some details...big whoop. the story is true even if the details were wrong. give the guy a break...people who majored in journalism might not be up on the technology they are asked to write about and when given TWO paragraphs the details are going to be lacking...

17. Um....I have a GPS for my car...
When I want to go somewhere I only have to turn it on and input my destination, not my starting point.

It already knows where I'm at. (Creepy, actually.)

21. That does not contradict what he wrote.
Your gps is a receiver.

It receives satellite signals, analyzes them and then puts the location on a screen.

It doesn't transmit anything.

23. I see what you're saying. Then what about those devices
that the bad guys in movies place on the underside of the victim's car so they can track them? Also, what about OnStar? Both of those devices transmit, don't they?

That's how you can use MobileMe to find your iPhone.
