They are just waiting to find their Fuhrer. I don't think Fox News will provide their Hitler because Fox is essentially about profit for Rupert Murdoch. But sooner or later, unless Democrats wise up and deal with the general anger out here in real America, the right wing will find some monster to avenge all the wrongs they perceive.
That is why I am so disappointed in Obama. He really needs to respond to the tremendous anger that Americans feel. We are a nation grieving our economic losses -- our lost jobs, business, homes, educations, livelihoods, health care. And what are Democrats doing to respond to that grief? Absolutely nothing. They are not even acknowledging the grief that people are going through. They just go on as if it were business as usual.
Obama personally does not communicate that he, as was said of Clinton, "feels our pain." He just talks about boring, abstract policies that are far too little and offer next to no hope.
Obama needs to go to Camp David for a weekend retreat, invite a group of bankrupt, homeless, really miserable and angry Americans including some Teabaggers with him and try to feel the anger and desperation that they feel at this time. And then he needs to let his staff know that if they don't feel the pain of Americans, they should resign. In particular, Geithner, Summers and Bernanke need to either feel Americans' pain or get out of the administration. It is not as if any one of them will starve if they quit.
Right now, there are still many Americans who are blaming their personal decisions for their problems. They think that they just borrowed too much money, that they were overly optimistic about the future. They have not heard about or comprehended what was going on in the financial sector -- the derivatives, the Ponzi schemes, the fraud, the depraved greed.
Ordinary Americans did not think when WalMart moved into their neighborhoods, about the fact that things were getting cheaper because jobs were being outsourced to countries that pay low wages. They did not think about the dangers of outsourcing and free trade, e.g., that their own jobs might be outsourced or that once their customers' jobs had been outsourced businesses like their own would be bankrupt. So, the worst of the anger and frustration have not hit yet.
Obama can respond to Americans' suffering. But he has to be willing to do it.
