China faces growing gender imbalance
More than 24 million Chinese men of marrying age could find themselves without spouses by 2020, says the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The gender imbalance among newborns is the most serious demographic problem for the country's population of 1.3 billion, says the academy.

It cites sex-specific abortions as a major factor, due to China's traditional bias towards male children.

The academy says gender selection abortions are "extremely common".

1. And what happens when you have a large pool of men who can't find wives or maybe jobs?
Or start families?

Social and political unrest.

8. They made their own problem............
Until this world starts taking real issue with the way women and girls are treated, what else is to be expected?

Now it's what they sow is what they reap.

Harmless, and sweet even.

:sarcasm:

Nope, nothing misogynist or society-damaging here!

3. The male-preference attitude...
Not only has produced a surplus of males, but has wreaked havoc on the personalities of girls. I was shocked at the number of my female Chinese students who told me of their parent's palpable and continuous disappointment for having birthed a girl. Their parents may still love them, but it's just not the same. In many cases, the only hope the girls can have for full acceptance is to give birth to a boy.

Or, maybe it's part of the plan. Not only limiting couples to one child, it's limiting many men to NO child.

Will this be your outrage du jour?

If the shoe were on the other foot, and someone suggested we could export men, would you find that 'sick' as well?

I thought not.

not so much.

and if this was about men, which would not be the same seeing how we dont have a history of selling our men for womens use.... no, i would not laugh. i dont see human suffering and gender murder as a joke.

12. Wow.
The 'joke' as it was, was about China importing rather than exporting.

You know... flag pins and the like?

If the situation were exactly reversed, I would have said exactly the same thing... and don't insult both of us by telling me you'd have been just as indignant.

How you can turn that comment into slavery and murder is amazing. To suggest that I find such things funny because you choose the most offensive interpretation possible reveals your impulse to voice outrage overrides consideration.

For the life of me I can't imagine looking so hard to find things to be offended by.

The following got a lot of laughs from male and female audiences;

"The male is a domestic animal which, if treated with firmness and kindness, can be trained to do most things."
Jilly Cooper.

"Men should be like Kleenex, soft, strong and disposable."
Cher.

"The quickest way to a man's heart is through his chest."
Roseanne Barr.

"Men are simple things. They can survive a whole weekend with only three things: beer, boxer shorts and batteries for the remote control.."
Diana Jordan.

I hope you will put those sexist pigs in their place.

16. You've assumed the worst once again. But gender relation discussions with you are always sophomoric.

I know several women who were so hungry to get into the US they married gay men. I wouldn't call them poor, exploited slaves. They just want to pursue their careers in a country where they can make the most bucks. Nor would I think that of the hundreds of thousands of other people who hang out at chat rooms or go through other avenues to get into the countries of their choice. It doesn't always have to do with prostitution/exploitation. I'm certain there are tons of women who would gladly marry some nice Chinese boy if it meant they also got something out of the deal. As would tons of men if the shoe was reversed.

But that poster is right. It's early Monday and you need to stoke the outrage fires. Have at it! It's important work.

that is what i posted on, not this whole shift you have gone. i stated i understood was in humor, also sick shit.

you also did not retract statement i tell her what she thinks and what to say. nor did you provide any info to your accusation.

then.... you do the same.... "taking the worse of course. sophmoric"

big fail, but then why would i be surprised that with gender extermination, you soft pedal it

19. No it's you who went off on the poster in a totally different vein from what s/he meant.
People trade shit every day, even when it comes to relationships. :eyes: I bet there are thousands of people on DU who would do anything to marry a nice Canadian or Brit man or woman just to have access to universal health care. You'll never get rid of trade and there's no reason to. You just like blasting people over perceived slights that YOU'VE manufactured, like you always do with your half understanding, half reading, and willingness to find something wrong with everyone.

And yes, these discussions with you are ALWAYS sophomoric. I like how you constantly try to tell me how I "soft pedal" it. When it comes to living a feminist lifestyle, I'm a thousand miles ahead of your traditional one. But this is a message board, so you can say any dumb thing.

23. Nope. That would be you. In case you never checked, this whole country is made up of "imports."

Our grandmothers weren't all forced prostitutes and slaves, even though many came from dire situations. Yet you choose to take the dirtiest meaning out of someone's words just to slam them. And then claim that person is putting words in YOUR mouth. :eyes:

I haven't seen someone look so hard for "SEXISM!" since the primaries, but apparently she's been appointed to find it where ever it may be... or not be... or could be if just the right spin was put on it.

Can you imagine how silent the world would be if no one spoke a word that could possibly offend anyone?

24. That's a behavioral response to overpopulation.
Societies with an excess population generally do not value women. The result is that there are fewer of them. Since women control the rate of reproduction--they can only be pregnant once at a time--this results in a population decline. This also encourages polyandry.

I'm not saying this is right or ethical, but it is true and ultimately it does work.

30. It is one of the side effects of their one child rule
In a society where male descendants are really the most important thing, it was bound to happen. This will be a natural population control for the next generation.
