13. Have you noticed ....
how many use that term in response to an unrec that isn't explained?

Have you also noticed that even if an unrec is explained, it doesn't satisfy most of the unrec complainers anyway?

They say "I think the unrec is cowardly"

I say that it is cowardly to make blanket insults about a large percentage of DU'rs who simply use a feature of this message board.

21. I think it's cowardly to "hit and run" Unrec, but I sure as hell don't complain if
the Unrecc-er stands by the unreccing.

May I ask you, what is the purpose of a "message board?" Is it to exchange ideas and comments? If I don't know why someone is unrecc-ing, how am I being enlightened about anything?

Again, please tell me what the purpose of a "message board" is, if there is not real message or one without content?

26. You and I both know what the purpose of a message board is. (edited)
Edited on Mon Jan-11-10 11:33 AM by A HERETIC I AM
Where we differ is on our understanding and perception of the unrecommended feature.

As stated above, NO ONE ever complains if someone rec's a thread anonymously.
No one ever complains if someone simply posts a "K & R".
I've never seen ANYONE complain that someone might use the Hide Thread feature, or for that matter, ignore or alert. (Yes, I suppose people do complain about being alerted on)
Here's the edit; I've never seen anyone complain that their thread received ZERO recs either.
Not very single thread deserves placement on the greatest page, for crying out loud. Not every thread needs or deserves to be applauded or to be even commented on. How many threads are put up on this message board on a daily basis that get no comments, zero recs and fall into oblivion?

I said this the other day, but I'll say it again, for you and the others who think a comment should be added when a member unrecs.

Here is the implied comment:
"In my opinion, this thread does not qualify for inclusion on the greatest threads page."

THAT IS ALL IT SAYS
If I unrec a thread, that is all I am saying.
It isn't an indictment of character, it isn't an insult and it isn't censorship. And it sure as hell isn't cowardly.

Too many want to read into an unrec such things as "I hate you" or "I don't think anything you say has merit" or "No one should read this thread".

It's complete and utter bollocks. Yet entirely too many people on this board have wrapped their minds around the idea that if a thread happens to be unrecc'd, it is somehow taken as a personal insult or as some horrible comment that can't be tolerated or as censorship or some other such bullshit.

28. Your last paragraph does not apply to my reasons to be against anonymous unrecs.
I'd just like to know WHY someone is unreccing. I don't care if they Rec my post nor do I care if they Unrec my post as long as they give me the benefit of their wisdom, stand behind what they say.

Look at it this way: if you disagree with my point of view, or you have evidence to discredit what I say in a post, I want to hear from you. Let me know your reason. This to me is why I am on a message board. I am not here to get on the Greatest Page, which I never read anyway, I just go the discussions directly.

(sigh)I can't explain it any further than to say what I said. It's all in the way I was brought up, I guess...my father calling me out if I smirked behind my brother's back, asking me to explain what was on my mind...it was embarrassing and uncomfortable, but I learned from him that ifyou have something to say you'd better come right out with it and defend it...

29. You are assuming way more than you should.
I'd just like to know WHY someone is unreccing.
They're unreccing because they don't think the thread rises to the level of being "great" and as a consequence, don't think it merits inclusion on the greatest page.

I don't care if they Rec my post nor do I care if they Unrec my post as long as they give me the benefit of their wisdom, stand behind what they say.
Why? Why do you seem to demand further clarification on a simple vote? Why is it necessary to "stand behind" the opinion that a particular thread doesn't merit inclusion on a list?

Look at it this way: if you disagree with my point of view, or you have evidence to discredit what I say in a post, I want to hear from you. Let me know your reason.
That is EXACTLY what we are doing here. We are exchanging ideas. The ONLY idea implied in the unrec feature is what I have said it is above. To insist it means something that it doesn't, and to do so over and over and over borders on the ridiculous.

This to me is why I am on a message board. I am not here to get on the Greatest Page, which I never read anyway, I just go the discussions directly.
Then why are you one of the most vocal on this subject? If it isn't important to you, ignore the little numbers! You seem to want to insist an unrec vote means something it doesn't.

(sigh)I can't explain it any further than to say what I said. It's all in the way I was brought up, I guess...my father calling me out if I smirked behind my brother's back, asking me to explain what was on my mind...it was embarrassing and uncomfortable, but ...
I'm sure your father was a fine man. But please, using the unrec button in no way rises to what you are suggesting. It isn't a smirk behind someones back, regardless how much you may wish it be regarded. As far as this comment; "I learned from him that if you have something to say you'd better come right out with it and defend it" is concerned, you know, often discretion is the better part of valor. I am sure that both you and I and almost every single DU'r has an opinion on some subject that if expressed sincerely, would likely result in the post being deleted and perhaps getting us banned. I KNOW I hold some opinions on some subjects that I do not express precisely because they are distasteful to many others or are out of the mainstream. This is in part why I hardly ever post in the Religion forum. My personal opinion of people who hold religious faith and my opinions on most religious dogma is deemed offensive by many and I realize it so I don't say anything. I don't want to go out of my way to be hurtful or mean spirited or offensive, even though many on this board think I am for no other real reason than I express an often contrary opinion.

The point of this thread is one every DU'r who is inclined to do what the OP suggests take to heart. Putting up a complaint about an unrec as the first post to a thread, particularly by the thread starter, smacks of a drastic self esteem problem. Being offended because someone holds the opinion that a given thread doesn't rise to a certain bar just screams out (to me, anyway) that the complainer has a terribly fragile ego and anything but 100% approval is something they can't stand.

Again, if you want to know the reason someone unrec's, just simply assume the reason is they don't think the thread should be included on the greatest page.

Because that is really all it is.

35. Well, I don't read minds so I am curious. That's me. Perhaps someone has a better idea
than mine. Nor do I have a fragile ego. I don't care if I get unrecced, as I said. And you won't find me "putting up a complaint...as the first post..."

As far as not wanting to offend or be distasteful or get yourself banned, I know what is and what is not appropriate and within the boundaries. It's just good common sense.

You really shouldn't get so carried away here. I'm too old to have hurt feelings on a message board, or fret that I got an Unrec. As a matter of fact, what I AM saying is that if you find me in error, just tell me. If you don't care for what my opinion is, just say it. I do not know everything and I come to DU to learn lots of time. There are plenty of people here who have contributed to my understanding of an issue by tangling with me and I thank them for it. I have changed my mind on several major issues because of it!

I am trying to argue for MORE free speech here...marketplace of ideas as our Founders might have said...

23. On issuing blanket statements...
Seeing as it's a feature of this board, available to all, I would like to see anyone calling others "trolls" for using the unrec feature get suspended for a couple of weeks. Or some other fitting punishment.

People think others owe them explanations for doing things.

Sure, it would be nice to get the feedback on an unrec. But, like you said, even the most rational feedback is often rejected out of hand and attributed to someone's just plain being mean or spiteful, or some other reason besides that the person truly didn't believe thread x, y, or z belonged on the Greatest page.

I can't believe this issue keeps coming up over and over again. It's like a really bad case of hemmorrhoids...

First, there are more unrecs than recommends overall, so it's never surprising that the early votes are unrecs. The percentages are that they will be unrecs.

Second, nothing is more annoying than a first post saying "well, who would unrecommend this?!!" That pretty much torpedoes the thread.
