The reaction at DU would have been a lot harsher.

4. Mush played a song called "Barack the Magic Negro" on his pathetic radio show
So it wasn't even about a "dialect" for the OxyMoron, just the skin pigmentation. Mush doesn't even like Michael Steele, and they're supposed to be on the same team.

8. Depends.
Was he saying that a "light-skinned" black man with "no Negro dialect" is somehow better? Then yes, I would call him racist.

Was he saying that a "light-skinned" black man with "no Negro dialect"has a better chance of winning an election in this country? Then no, I'd call him a realist living in a racist country.

And even beyond that, there's previous actions to consider. Given Rush's previous statements regarding black people (e.g. telling a caller to his show to "take the bone out of your nose"), it's more likely that he'd make a racist comment than someone like, say, Harry Reid, who doesn't have a history of making racist, bigoted remarks.

12. Epic Fail
No, because its already well known that Rush is a racist!

And there is nothing wrong with the words light skinned or negro either. Reid is an older man and negro was a common term used in his time.

He is no Rush for sure. It just bothers me to no end that people are excusing and rationalizing the use of the word negro. It bugs me more than Harry's comments. Perhaps it is a generational thing but negro just sounds nasty

Have you ever looked up the word negro. It comes from the latin word niger which means black.

It has ancient roots in the language and there is nothing wrong with the word!

30. and c*nt has its roots with cradle and goddesses and used to be a title of respect
There is even a kick ass 3rd wave Feminist book called Cunt exploring this topic. Yet it is still highly inappropriate to use it and even more so if you are a politician. I heart Latin by the way :hi:
I would never call one of my friends cunt and would never call one of my friend a negro

33. Well that refers to a part of the female
anatomy, so it would be a slur to call someone that. But Negro means black, a color and commonly accepted term for people of that color. There is a big difference.

And why do you camouflage the word cunt anyway? Is it a banned word or something?

35. I didnt know what DU's rules are about cunt
actually if you read the link below Cunt comes from the goddess Cunti, Kunda and Cunina. Ms. Walker further explains that cunt was synonymous with women in some ancient writings

http://books.google.com/books?id=CByPU90k6rMC&pg=PA197&lpg=PA197&dq=cunt+barbra+walker&source=bl&ots=1YalU1xFiW&sig=q9IzBe0HB0-eSKxeUM-mTfyK6UA&hl=en&ei=0KhLS5LLB8aXtge8p-nkDQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CAwQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=&f=false

40. Im not aware of any rules
that disallow writing the word cunt. But I could be wrong. I don't think so, I don't think any word is banned at DU. Anyway, its obvious nothing will change your mind that negro is a slur in the same league as the word cunt is when referring to a woman, I disagree, and have shown why the argument in my opinion falls apart but won't waste any more time arguing about it.

25. My 95 yr old mother-in-law in Nebraska stills refer to Obama as a "colored man"
and she proudly voted for him. I am sure that Harry wishes he had used another word other than "Negro" but the point he was attempting to make was not that much off the money. In my humble opinion this whole flap is really much to do about nothing.

41. Really?
The word Negro is offensive? Really?

Is Obama light-skinned? Yes.

Does he tend to change his dialect with the company he is in? Yes.

Is this often called the Tyra Banks complex? Yes.

Is that funny? Kinda

Worth all of the reverse-racism cross-burningesque comments? Apparently so.

Oh, btw, if the word Negro offends you, then stay away from all of the spanish speaking countries in the world.

If he just pointed out the facts (Obama IS light skinned, he does have an educated Midwestern accent) as positives in antiquated language, he's just be exposing himself as tacky and clueless.
