Few Protest At Detroit Auto Show

POSTED: Monday, January 11, 2010
UPDATED: 7:42 pm EST January 11, 2010

DETROIT -- Charlie Gennara thought there would be a sizable showing for a planned "tea party" protest outside the annual international auto show in Detroit on Monday.

For the first 45 minutes, though, it was just him and one other person voicing their displeasure with the billions in aid spent by the government on General Motors, Chrysler and auto lender GMAC Financial Services.

"I didn't expect this," said Gennara, a 58-year-old retired carpenter from Northville, Mich. "Most of the tea parties I've been to I've seen 300 or a couple hundred at least."

So-called "tea parties" have become popular forums for conservatives to vent over government tax policies, the economic stimulus packages, bank bailouts and the health care overhaul. But a call to protest the auto show by a Virginia-based group, the National Taxpayers Union, was opposed by some Michigan conservatives, who said their economically battered state needs the jobs.

Joan Fabiano, who organizes tea parties as part of a group called Grassroots in Michigan, e-mailed supporters asking them not to show up Monday, saying such action could hurt business in the state. .............(more)

20. I countered it.
And why would anyone protest the Auto company bailouts? With the wholesale loss of industry in this country everyone should be in favor of preserving what we have, especially if it is homegrown.

4. ROFL, protesting the Government saving the auto industry at the Detroit Auto Show
This just shows how stupid these people can be.

I am trying to come up with a comparison but can't think of an adequate one.

Like protesting water in a building that is on fire...maybe???

13. Fox seems to have grown disenchanted with the tea baggers
Not sure why, except maybe they figured out that as anemic as the support is for the GOP, losing more votes they should have in their column to an insurgent third party isn't a prescription for success.

and no one came? O.M...G! I would just die!!! ;)

I hope this idiot gets plenty of media exposure and has to walk around Detroit with a proverbial 'kick me' sign pinned to his back.

18. I wouldn't laugh too much
I think that the fact there's a sort of surprise in peoples' responses to the small size of the event tells the story. We're used to them having larger numbers out at these things. If there hadn't been a division within the teabaggers over the character of the protest, there probably would have been at least twice as many as were out there (I counted about 30-40 total attendees, with people coming and going -- about 25 consistently).

I figure that the next time the teabaggers call a rally, they won't make the mistake of dividing their forces; they'll work out a unity in advance.

And, yeah, I look at it in the context of the other rally that took place downtown at the same time, held by autoworkers supporting the bailout and wanting "green jobs" created out of the stimulus money, which had only about 40-50 at it -- and its organization was unified. (I was downtown for this rally, but checked up on the other while there.)

21. So, Ms. Fabiano, Protests Are Only When It's Convenient?
I found that part hilarious. We're going to protest everything we don't like about government spending except the part that helps us personally. What convenient principles.

Just shows how fraudulent the whole movement really is.

26. Charlie, I THINK I may have figured out why your protest was so poorly received
If you decide to hold a huge rally outside the North American International Auto Show, and the theme of your rally is "We think your job should have disappeared," most people (I was going to say 'most sane people' but we ARE talking teabaggers) are going to believe if they go to this rally someone whose job you're protesting is going to come over and beat the shit out of you.

29. Wish I had known...
I would actually have shown up. I've missed out on going after any of these "tea party" idiots. Of course every time any of these people have tried to organize any form of "protest" in the Detroit area they've gotten the smack down laid on them. Try telling anyone who actually works for a living in the Detroit area that Reaganomics was a good thing.
