Grayson hauls in $850K in donations for re-election


U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson skyrocketed to national fame with his often over-the-top criticism of political opponents last year, and his combustible commentary also has helped fill his campaign coffers.

A Grayson for Congress official reported late Thursday that the freshman Democrat from Orlando will report he hauled in roughly $850,000 in donations in the last quarter of 2009.

That would be the same three-month period during which he was crowned a liberal tough guy on cable news talk shows, at times comparing former Vice President Dick Cheney to a vampire; repeating his House floor speech that the GOP health care plan is basically "Don't get sick," and if you do, "Die quickly;" or mocking a lobbyist-turned-Federal-Reserve official as a "K Street whore."

His campaign said that Grayson's fourth quarter fund-raising haul leaves the millionaire lawyer with roughly $1 million in cash on hand, a sizable sum for an incumbent with 10 months before the Nov. 2 general election.

Final contribution reports are not due until next week. But a huge number of Grayson's donors are likely to be from all over the country, from people who liked his take-no-prisoners style and flocked
