Canada markets seal products to China
OTTAWA, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Canada's fisheries minister was in China Tuesday, marketing Canadian seal products to shore up the industry affected by a European Union ban.
In a teleconference news conference, Fisheries Minister Gail Shea said during the past week, she and sealing industry officials from five companies have met with Chinese officials to push for more trade in sealskins, meat and organs, the Canwest News Service reported.
"China is a huge market," she said. "The EU was a small market for Canada and of course we're disappointed in their actions (but) there are many other markets out there."
In the past, China and Russia were the two largest markets for Canadian seal products, the Globe and Mail said.
Tuesday night, Shea attended the 30th annual China Fur and Leather Fair in Beijing to promote sealskin imports.
