New York Times Editorial Staff agrees with FDL on Gruber!!!
EDITORS' NOTE

"On July 12, the Op-Ed page published an article by Jonathan Gruber, a professor of economics at M.I.T., on health insurance and taxation. On Friday, Professor Gruber confirmed reports that he is a paid consultant to the Department of Health and Human Services, and that his contract was in effect when he published his article. The article did not disclose this relationship to readers.

Like other writers for the Op-Ed page, Professor Gruber signed a contract that obligated him to tell editors of such a relationship. Had editors been aware of Professor Gruber’s government ties, the Op-Ed page would have insisted on disclosure or not published his article."

FDL WINS on this one.
It DOES make a difference that Gruber was On the Payroll!!!

It would be better for Krugman to just walk away from this one.

2. Treating this as some sort of scandal
for the Obama administration is an indication of how far our public discourse has sunk.

3. Not treating it as such...
...is, unfortunately, a sign of how far the discourse on DU has sunk, IMHO.

4. Scandal?...not so much.
What it does is highlight a group of people who will attack FDL when they are clearly right on this issue just because she has been critical of the Obama administration.

It DOES make a difference that Gruber WAS on the payroll.
His stuff has been cut & pasted all over DU by several conservative "Pro-HCR" posters as well as used by Krugman in his support for the current bills.

I'm going to wait an hour so you can't go back an edit your post again before I reply.

9. Who do you have to back up YOUR opinion?
I will stand with the Editorial Staff of the New York Times.
They are correct in posting this retraction.

It DOES make a difference that Gruber WAS on the payroll.

12. Well, technically, he was not on the payroll. He was given a sole source

contracting job within a cabinet department(several actually) to:

ASPE requires a technical memorandum on the estimated changes in health insurance coverage and associated costs and impacts to the government under alternative specifications of health system reform. The requirement includes developing estimates of various health reform proposals on health insurance coverage and cost. The alternative specifications to be considered will be derived from the President’s health reform proposal. This project is a continuation of work that Dr. Gruber is currnetly providing for ASPE. (Emphasis mine)

16. Not quite the same thing. FDL accused Gruber of being a paid shill. NYT is saying he had a
contract with the HHS (not administered by the White House) and that it's important to disclose it when publishing an op-ed.

There is a difference and the fact that FDL is now running away from their original accusation of a propaganda scandal is telling. FDL realizes Krugman caught them in a sensational lie.

17. Being the recipient of a grant does not mean being on the payroll.
Edited on Wed Jan-13-10 01:14 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
It should have been disclosed and on tha tissue, the NYT is agreeing with FDL. But on FDL's assertion that Gruber was paid for...I don't think so. Otherwise just about all researchers are also government owned.
