Sarah Palin is queen of the pro-actively ignorant
As a college educator, I am constantly amazed by the length to which people go to avoid true knowledge of the world.

And I am totally amazed at the same thing. I seriously wonder what place some of these people live on.

Of course, I refuse to own a television set, let alone spend time watching the darn thing. I read, and have since I turned four. That's a lotta years......about 56 of them....reading everything I could lay my hands on and looking up everything I didn't understand. However, my question is, how the h*** does someone get to college and/or go to college, especially for journalism, without learning something about North and South Korea and Viet Nam, even if it's only the current propaganda?

I do NOT understand it.

Of course, I have also had a long conversation....over several years....with an American friend who swore to me that she was a Republican. Absolutely swore to me. After this ongoing conversation, she has decided that I am correct, and she is really a democrat, and really further to the left of the regular democrat.....and that she's not religious at all, but may be a deist. How does one get to the age of 63 without knowing these things? She's intelligent, she is a thinker, she's artistic, and she's a lovely person....but she never questioned her identity as a Christian Republican. I do NOT understand.

9. Accept what you have always been told and avoid thinking at all costs
Some of these kids in survey classes seem to actually go out of their way to avoid holding a substantive thought for more than a couple of minutes. I teach history and government, but mainly basic - and I do mean basic - critical thinking skills.

"Like, OMG OMG, do you beleuhv that history professor wants us to, like, actually read and stuff?!"

"And no texting in class, like, who does he think he is?"

12. yes, well.....
Overheard at a lunch line in the UofT cafeteria:

"So, you know.....it's like....I never really understood the time frame, until...you know... he committed suicide. Know what I'mn saying?"

I asked her if she was an English major (yes, I have a vile sense of humour). Her response? A large smile, "Yeah, I am, how did you know?"

Oh. Dear. Goddess on toast points.
