A woman called CNN this AM to complain about the pictures from Haiti.
Apparently she was upset that some of the pictures were graphic. She must be a delicate flower because I had been watching. There were a lot of pictures of destroyed buildings, and pictures of traumatized people. I didn't see anything graphic except the graphic nature of human misery. I guess that woman didn't want any frowns to begin her day.

Gawd help this woman if something real hits her area. However, she's the type to consider a power outage of an hour that will be fixed to be a major event. Unfortunately. CNN would probably cover it, and then blame somebody with no real control over it.

1. We have a lot of children in this country
and I am not JUST talking about people under aged 18, if you know what I mean.

8. I get what you are saying, but there's no rationale (IMHO) for small
children to be exposed to CNN. My kid was 4 when 9/11 occurred--he didn't see the endless loops of the plane hitting.

Now that he's almost 13 he knows what happened, as he should.

16. Better that they be exposed YOUNG lest the recruiters in Junior High and High School will
nurture them with "video games" and snatch them up to sign a contract when they turn 18 y.o.

Our chlidren need to KNOW of the existence of "evil."

7. Oh but that's ok for CNN to show. They just can't show
Edited on Wed Jan-13-10 01:29 PM by Subdivisions
the dead bodies of American soldiers and innocent civilians in the streets (except those killed by suicide bombers blowing up police stations and security checkpoints) of Iraq or Afghanistan.

4. I'm astonished at how few people have empathy, I really am.
But that lack of empathy explains so very much in these times.

12. Oh god, I had forgotten about that awful woman's batherings.
"What I'm hearing which is sort of scary is that they all want to stay in Texas. Everybody is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (chuckle) – this is working very well for them." –Former First Lady Barbara Bush, on the hurricane evacuees at the Astrodome in Houston, Sept. 5, 2005

25. My sig file is Barbara Bush's comments about the war
I realize it's poor form to mock an older person, but I still feel the same fury every time I see her "beautiful mind" comment.

Back when the MSM was showing pictures of Iraq what wife of an expresident said she didn't like them because it "ruined her beautiful mind" or something to that effect...could it have been Babs Bush.

20. Last night, they let a one-second clip of a dead woman
lying on some rubble filter through and they did a quick cut back to the anchor. When they replayed the footage loop a few minutes later, they had edited her out.

I also saw some images that were probably dead children with their faces pixillated out of focus.

Those were the worst I saw. Not sure if the caller had seen these or if she really was just a wilting flower.

23. Oh my lord a DEAD body!!!!
that is one of the problems with our coverage. That's way too graphic for Lilly faced Americans. By the way not making fun, there are GOOD and SOLID historic reasons for this. We have removed death form our lives... and sanitized it. SO if she saw those images... yes I can see it, why she was shocked.

Now that same footage will be shown in other places where death is not something we hide from.

24. That is what is wrong with a lot of Americans..
they believe the lies and they love their news sanitized..When they talk about bombing a country they don't even think of them as people. I heard some nut on cspan this morning talking about bombing Mecca and something relating to the hodge..

26. Like someone else said upthread, I'm also surprised by the lack of empathy
Or maybe I'm not so surprised.

Did anyone here stop to consider that maybe she had the sound off and just happened to see those images and it came as a shock and she called before recovering? Or that maybe she has a severe case of PTSD from some similar (or not so similar) event that causes her to experience terrible mental pain. Images that won't go away and which cause people to want to bash their heads in to stop them. I guess not many here can understand that feeling.

One doesn't have to be a "child" in order to be traumatized by the sight of dead bodies and destruction. For people to suggest that others be as insensitive to those sights as they are is just pretty nasty. What's the attitude... "Oh...I can view those things, so everyone else should be able to also!" Bullshit.

Although that's not nearly as nasty as correlating an inability to see images of death and destruction with a prejudice against poor black people. Vile and obnoxious.

Sometimes people just have a really low tolerance for viewing certain things, and that's all it is. Low tolerance and high sensitivity.
