Limbaugh Discourages Donations to Haiti, Questions Obama’s Motives for Encouraging Donations

Newsprism has been monitoring the blogosphere today to guage reactions to the earthquake in Haiti. I’m happy to report that on the left and right, the predominant reaction has been to offer prayers and sympathy and to inform people where they can donate to relief efforts.

At wizbang.com and breitbart.com (scroll down to see comments), I’ve found some very offensive remarks and some inappropriate politicization, but nobody should judge these sites nor the conservative movement based on a few wingnuts. (In fact, it could well be that a misguided liberal troll or two is trying to discredit the right with these posts.)

The alleged leader of the conservative movement, however, has shown his true colors today in a way that should shock and disgust any true conservative, and certainly, any good Christian or good American.

On his radio program, Rush Limbaugh has not only chosen to politicize the earthquake, but is actually discouraging listeners from donating to relief efforts!

Limbaugh’s reasoning is chilling: First, he claims that “we” have already donated via income taxes…in other words, since our government is helping Haiti, we need do no more (other than complain about it.) Second, Limbaugh insists that such donations would be wasted anyhow:

There are people that have been trying to save Haiti just as we’re trying to save Africa. You just can’t keep throwing money at it because the dictatorships there just take it all…(and) you’re not creating a permanent system where people can provide for themselves.

Aside from conflating Africa and Haiti (a rather racist rhetorical move), Limbaugh ignores the fact that the charities involved are or will be working on the ground directly with the victims in a country whose government has been all but wiped out; no dictator will be able to pilfer a substantial amount from donated funds. He also ignores the fact that relief is needed immediately without regard to the systemic or institutional issues he brings up.

Just as unconscionable is Limbaugh’s accusation that President Obama is using whitehouse.gov to solicit donations for earthquake relief in order to 1.) skim some of those donations and 2.) develop a list of contributors from whom to solicit donations “for (Obama) and other causes.”

But all whitehouse.gov does is link directly to charities providing relief to earthquake victims and survivors!

This is not conservatism. It’s the most vile of partisan politics mixed with a disgraceful lack of human compassion.

Limbaugh’s next move, predictably, will be to capitalize on the controversy caused by his cold, cold hearted comments.

21. How will this attitude play with right wing religious folk who do missionary work in other countries

like Haiti? Ex - there is a neighborhood family of republican major church goers who do two trips a year to various impoverished countries, bringing money for food, and who help physically build churches, schools, outhouses, whatever it takes, in order to get the chance to spread their version of "the word." Leaving aside the motive of converting people in general in this way, I do understand that a lot of these people do a whole lot of good things for people who live in extreme poverty.

And there are others who do missions in impoverished countries without any religious basis, like some of our local doctors who perform free surgeries for those in extreme need. Heck, there is a local animal vet who is not only very involved locally in spay/neuter projects, but also he and a few others donate their time and fly to impoverished places to do free spay/neuters as well (I think they are leaving for another mission in a few days). I don't know their politics, but I'd bet some of them are also republicans. Should they stop donating their time or money to such causes in general? Or is it still okay for his listeners to donate things during good times so long as they don't do so during emergencies? Limbaugh has gone mental at this point.

By making these false allegations about Obama's motivations in helping those in need, and by saying that you can't keep throwing money at places like this, he is impugning not only Obama's integrity but that of some of his listeners. I hope they get that message loud and clear.
