I hope these four-legged heroes will be rewarded by finding some living victims to rescue.

I remember reading a story after 9/11 that many rescue dogs were treated for symptoms of depression because there were no living victims to be found. (Not to mention the respitory problems they encountered).

All the dogs were lying flat on the concrete, utterly exhausted, tongues out of their mouths. Little heroes.

45. I live just south of OKC and when the bombing happened, the dogs were brought in

from all over the country. Some of the handlers put out a plea for dog boots as the rubble was very hard on the dog's feet. I remember thinking, "Where are they ever going to find dog boots in Oklahoma City?". That thought had barely formed in my head when a truck filled with dog boots raced up and started unloading them. The time from the request to the delivery was about 30 minutes. I don't think I'll ever forget that.

sniffing for bombs. He was going to be a drug dog for the ATF but was too traumatized. He was rehabbed beautifully by my man, Cesar. HOORAY FOR DOGS!

My BIL is in the RCMP and says the Dog-Handler tells him his dog actually gets depressed when he finds a non-living person after a long search. The poor things must really be traumatized after endeavors like Haiti will be. But they don't quit ..... he says his will go until he literally drops unless he's forced off a search.

He's not a rescue dog, but maybe someday, he'll be a therapy dog. He's in his crate for the evening and needs his rest, but he'll be getting an extra cuddle or two tomorrow.

He works does search and rescue for Travis County here in Texas.

He and his wife both have dogs. They are both going.

He has a rescue dog, she has a cadaver dog.

No doubt, he will have some heart breaking stories when he returns.

They are very brave; they must be very special people. And their dogs are going to do so much good! On TV last night it looked like the ratio of humans to dogs in those rescue teams was surprisingly high; your friends are taking as many dogs as some of the entire teams are.

Professionally trained "sniffer" search dogs from around the world have been recruited this week to aid rescue operations in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. The effort appears to be unprecedented in scale, matching the devastation already documented in the Caribbean country.

French teams with "sniffer dogs" were seen boarding vans yesterday, headed to the airport on their way to Haiti. The dogs are trained to serve, so many excitedly jumped forward on their leashes in apparent anticipation.

China dispatched a chartered plane containing multiple sniffer dogs and 10 tons of tents, food and medical equipment. A somber ceremony was held at the Beijing airport before the teams left, with handlers and their dogs lined up, equipment at the ready. The team from China arrived in Haiti today and is presently at work there.

An Itar Tass bulletin reports that a team from the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) left Moscow today, also bound for Haiti. The IL-76 plane contained 22 rescuers in total. Among the team were eight doctors, two psychologists and six canine specialists with search and rescue dogs. Another news report mentioned that the dogs—3 Labradors, 2 golden retrievers and a German shepherd—helped to ease the tension of those on board the plane, which had a stop off in Iceland. The dogs are traveling freely, without cages, but onlookers are discouraged from having contact with the on-duty dogs. An EMERCOM spokesperson said, “The dogs are to work heavily in stress conditions and their state cannot be put in the slightest jeopardy."
