Gallup - "Healthcare Bill Support Ticks Up; Public Still Divided" - Democrats Heavily Support It
This blows a hole in the current talking point on this board that this bill is a Republican bill. If it were, you would expect Republican members of Congress and Republicans themselves to support it, and Democrats to oppose it:

1. Hmmm, a Gallup poll, known for cherry picking in the Midwest in
mostly all white towns north of the Mason/Dixon line. If you don't think so, ask yourself if you have ever been polled by Gallup if you live on either coast or a large city.

2. The question is "for A healthcare bill", not for THE healthcare bill.
Makes a world of difference, no?

3. Not a REPUBLICAN bill, a CORPORATE bill.
Unfortunately, they aren't the same thing.

4. No A DEMOCRATIC bill, REPUBLICANS are CORPORATIST...
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is by definition corporatist, and they have been trying to kill this bill (and climate change legislation) since Day One.

The poll is what it is. The vast majority of Democrats support health care reform. They are not screaming "Kill The Bill." Likewise, per a CNN poll most of the opposition to the bill is among folks who believe it is too liberal, rather than not liberal enough.

5. CNN ...
Which still has a decided conservative slant since Bush supporters bought into it and began sitting on the Board of Directors. What would you expect them to say. Likewise for the poll. "A" health care bill could mean a single payer option not the crap they are trying to palm off on us.

And to answer your question, Republicans would oppose it because they think if it doesn't pass they could pick up some seats in Congress in 2010 and perhaps the presidency in 2012. They like the people who support what is actually trying to be passed are not known for their connection to the real world.

I am among the people whom you claim do not exist who would like this bill killed and the Democrats to start over without Republican input or corporate leaning input like that of this administration. Is this where all the love and attachment for this one poll comes from? You got any others that reflect an actual diverse poor to middle class demographic? Trouble with cherry picking is that you end up with a lot of pits that people can't swallow.

7. You have GOT to be kidding
aside from a predilection with cheap media polls and Gallop which are designed to influence public opinion, rather than reflect it the characterization of this bogus bill as "health care reform" and the Democratic Senator's who's health care lobbyist's drafted it as anything other than corporatist is laughably absurd.

If this travesty passes as is- you can expect major losses in 2010 (especially now that the President has empowered every two bit corrupt extortionist in the Senate to do the same to the upcoming financial legislation).

It is impressive, though- after 11 short months, the Dems have managed associate themselves with- and protect the interests of two of the most "popular" groups in America- health insurers and PhARMA- and now they're set to further align themselves with the banksters & fraudsters!

Now that's the ticket!

8. The Travesty Is To Give Up And Accept The Status Quo And Allow Thousands More To Die
Thousands of people die because of lack of health care, which is due to lack of health insurance. The bills extend access to millions of people, and lowers the deficit. It is a choice between the status quo and getting the best bill possible.

The Democrats have associated themselves with the interests of the American people. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has fought this bill from Day One, and if you believe that making common cause with them is somehow progressive, than we just disagree.

The status quo is unacceptable and I just do not accept the idea that there is anything noble in giving lip service to single payer, then going down in defeat because the votes are not there.

9. Since the Democrats are pushing this giveaway to the industry
you can't absolve them of corporatism. They're just not as good at it yet.

10. Yet, The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Opposes The Bills
Up is down I guess when the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been spending millions trying to kill health care reform. Corporatism means doing things that the corporate dominated U.S. Chamber of Commerce opposes. Okay.

Why not argue that the Sierra Club is anti-environment while you are at it?

11. They're just pissed cause the bill requires the insurance companies to give us a policy after we
send them our money. Otherwise, it's a nice, bidness friendly bailout. Although, it has encouraged me that we won some concessions on that effing excise tax.

6. the fact that X% of Democrats like it doesn't blow a hole in anything
it just proves that a lot of Dems are as easily duped as Republicans.

12. Yeah, that poll with the green lines keeps showing up and I keep wondering how many of your
average Democrats are that aware of the details. I mean most Democrats don't spend their day reading a 2000 page bill, analyzing the details, and crunching the numbers. I think a lot would be like I was when I worked 12-16 hours a day. Assume we elected a good Democrat, catch a detail here and there and assume any negative talk I hear about it is sour grapes from Republicans. I mean that really is about all most people who are trying to make a living and raise kids have time for.
