Text "HAITI" to 90999 to make a direct 10 dollar donation (to the red cross) off your phone bill.

Ben Stiller made the announcement on Larry King tonight. This seems like a convenient way to make a donation one might otherwise put off (to avoid dealing with the forms, online process, or deciding who to donate through). The amount is reasonable too.

I'm sorry I don't have more information. The announcement was brief and at the end of the show. I know T-Mobile has not set up the service at this point because I tried, but I imagine the larger providers have. (Sprint, Verizon...)

It's easy information to remember and pass on to the next guy. I trust the Red Cross and the information coming from Ben Stiller and Larry King.

Edit: Evidently T-Mobile has set up the service. My mistake.

I did as instructed above, got an "are you sure?" message back, confirmed it, and got a thank-you message.


It was really fast, and it's $10 more for the Red Cross.

Anyone wishing to donate or provide assistance in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that struck near Port au Prince on Jan 12, 2010, is asked to contact the Center for International Disaster Information. The Center, operated under a grant from the United States Agency for International Development's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and initial support from IBM, has become a valuable resource to the public, as well as US government agencies, foreign embassies and international corporations. You can also text "HAITI" to "90999" and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill. Or you can go online to organizations like the Red Cross and Mercy Corps to make a contribution to the disaster relief efforts.

6. It will go to American Red Cross, NOT International. Go direct to IRC

IRC is a much better run, faster and less expensive organization than American Red Cross.

Thanks for posting this and please make sure the money goes where it will do good. I found after Katrina that American Red Cross wasted wayyyyyy too much money as a whole. Met some really great AMC workers, but for the organization? No. Donate to IRC instead.

4. American Red Cross has this on their website, I prefer IRC (International), hate ARC

ARC is too slow, takes too much of the money for themselves, are very inefficient as a whole. Here is IRC's website, go there and donate through them. I quit trusting American Red Cross after Katrina, go with International who are much better.
