Hell is freezing over at this moment.

I'm watching The View and Elisabeth Hasselbeck is saying Robertson is wrong in what he said recently regarding what happened to Haiti. And if that isn't enough, she's saying Obama is right for giving moral and material support to them. I can't believe it.

2. Robertson says Haitians made a deal with the Devil.
No, really. For reals.

3. Haiti made a deal
with the Devil way back when it wanted independence from France. The Devil said sure and now it's payback time.

4. There are probably 20 threads about this
Patty boy said Haiti made a deal with the devil, and that's why God punished them with this earthquake...

Or some such nonsense.

12. Can't say I'm surprised
Wasn't it he who prayed for the hurricane to strike ungodly New England?

In any case, leave DU for 24 hours and the next thing you know there's a collection of threads assuming you know what they're talking about.

Then again, this is Kathie Lee Gifford. Does she have a career to ruin?

6. Robertson has very little influence among Christians
The vast majority of rank-and-filers ignore him, because they know he's nuts. He has his band of followers, but I doubt the 700 Club has stellar ratings.

11. I miss Jim and Tammy Bakker--grew up with them in NC
That's when people knew crazy, and just watched for the entertainment value. We were hippie professors' kids, and my older sister became part of the kids PTL club in the early 70s (at age 9?) just because it was funny. I went to Heritage USA in my early 20s--my plant-enhanced days--and rode the Jesus train. A transcendent experience I'll never forget. I still have my Heritage USA potholder. ;-)

Crazy Christian TV shows then were quaint, amusing add-ons to late-night parties. Neither respectable Southern Conservatives nor Liberals wanted anything to do with them.

I confess I didn't take the warnings about the evangelical right seriously enough. Never thought they'd infiltrate govt to the degree they did during Bush. By then, watching the 700 Club had become considerably less amusing.

19. We used to watch their shows, too
For the entertainment value, to see what outrageous thing they would say next.

A good bit of their ratings could come from that type of audience.

10. Of course, you know where the 'deal with the devil' story came from
in the first place?

American slave owners promoted that story to discourage their own slaves from emulating the Haitian revolt.

It was a racist lie then, and it is a racist lie now.

If the reaction had only been slight, she would have backed Robertson.

The US would be a much better place if more pukes had just a tiny bit of compassion for people.

in the media by right-wing Christians.

Here ya go. (Not that it will be enough for some)

And as someone has already pointed out on this thread, Robertson doesn't represent mainstream Christian thought. He's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease.
