Ignoring the obvious (something so many here are excellent at)
The coverage of the catastrophe in Haiti has NOT been good as expected (nor I feel the monetary commitments by too may segments of the upper class). MSNBC and NBC virtually ignored it initially. There was NONE while I was watching cable this morning. And the money just isn't flowing like it's needed. The Yankees have committed I think $5 million, but why hasn't MLB followed suit.

My point remains, if this were an island of mostly White people, the response and coverage would be wall to wall. One lost white girl or a police chase of a carjacker gets better coverage.

29. Really. Our local news (ABC affiliate) spent a long time
interviewing a local Haitian man whose family is in Port au Prince. It was heartbreaking. He hadn't slept since the quake in his attempt to find out if they had survived. The rest of the local news was also about Haiti, with some network stuff and local stories about people with direct connections to Haiti, including some groups who were sending aid to Haiti. The only story about a white person was the one about the American husband who dug his wife out of the rubble. She was a relief worker.

Something must be wrong with the OP's television reception.

15. Why are you hell bent on finding racism in our gov't response to this?
Sure, the right-wingers are responding in typically racist fashion. No surprise there. But to suggest that the media isn't covering this as it might otherwise or to suggest that people aren't donating as they might otherwise is not based in any facts that we can possibly know at this time.

I am hearing reports on the rapid large sums the Red Cross is raising. And it sure seems like people are pretty focused on the tragedy.

So please quit trying to make the "facts" fit your predetermined conclusion. That's something Republicans do.

18. I think Olberman's show was in the can by the time it aired
just after the quake. That's the reason for the lapse there. MSNBC isn't CNN. They don't have the infrastructure to jump on stories worldwide. Although bad management at CNN has tried to turn it into a pallid Pox News, they have maintained the international news infrastructure.

It would be nice if charities would keep a running tally of donations received versus donations needed, though. That would tell more of the story.

Most of the Indian Ocean basin is inhabited by brown and black people, yet I remember there was a worldwide outpouring of charity for them. I think you are off the mark about Haiti. I hope you are off the mark about Haiti.

Some small-town, Southern papers weren't doing much coverage. Every prominent newspaper, however, had banner headlines and photos above the fold. Not a white face in any of those photos.

What the Florence, AL Times Daily covers doesn't seem to represent the coverage in real papers. I wonder how many of those front pages you looked at. I really do. The bulk of the papers covered the Haiti disaster as the lead story, or at least on the front page.

You provide a link. We see what's there. It seems you did not. Here's the San Jose, CA Mercury News:

The Right wing is basically ignoring this tragedy. And all of the purer than thou folks here who think their opinion counts are fooling themselves. In the end, the people in DC will make sure that Haiti only gets what it needs to survive, unless of course there is something in it for them, like rebuilding the country, privatizing everything.

86. OK...
...let's start at the beginning....

"You on the other hand are justifying burying a story that could help Haiti and put a spotlight on the media not doing its job as good as it should."

I am countering that the media IS doing its job and the coverage is wall to wall and the world is responding. I am not sure what more the news could do other than report and give information on how to help Haiti - which they are doing quite well.

My point about lying is that the OP is making shit up about this (or ignoring to further a cause). I UNRECd because I thought the OP disingenuous. You seemed to sign on and imply that exaggerating a problem is OK if it gets the attention needed. I disagree.

As for the claim of racism...I was referring to the OPs suggestion that racism is causing no one to pay attention which I contend is false. So, I stand corrected that you had espoused that idea.

89. I admit that you are correct...but one of the ways to make that happen
Is to see that their lack of coverage IS talked about.

51. Seems to me...
...that some people are HOPING for the media to ignore this epic tragedy and LOOKING for ways to compare it to the Katrina response for whatever reason.

From what I have seen, the media is all over this (some were bitching that the media was not on this story right after it happened - hard to get news out when there is no power, thousands are dead and trapped and night has fallen) and dozens of countries, private groups and individuals have sent aid, people and supplies to the city.

I do not disagree that there is a disparity in media coverage in this country when talking about missing white girls. This will transcend and no one (other than assholes that follow Pat Robertson) will see this as a 'black' or 'white' thing. This is a human tragedy and the OVERWHELMING majority of humans will see it as such.

60. There is good reporting by the indies -- Amy, Laura Flanders
Thom. Our effed up corporate media isn't going to have an epiphany overnight.

61. Wrong side of the island. Which is pretty much the attitude too many have taken
If this happened in the Dominician Republic, a favorite tourist destination and favorite of conservatives like Rush Limbaugh, we'd be all over this like flies on shit.

Haiti serves no purpose to the United States (in the opinion of many). They are poor, they have an unstable government and there isn't any tourism established.

I hate the mentality that some have towards countries like Haiti. When I ask "What Would Jesus Do?" well he would have been there on the first plane to Haiti helping out wherever he could. I can't fly to Haiti but I will donate what I can.

63. Thank you, too many here think that help for them is a given
and too many here want to stifle voices who want the horror out front glazed over like donuts.

64. This is fucking ridiculous. We are all over it. The coverage is wall to wall
The president's response is swift, decisive and and BIG. Americans and others around the world have3 been pouring money into the ICRC and dozens of other charities. Fire fighting and rescue teams from Europe, SA, the US and China have responded. Many people with expertise are on planes headed toward Haiti.

I call bullshit.

67. Perhaps I should clarify it
I think our president has done a better job than the last administration. But I feel the country, as a whole, as the opinion that Haiti isn't worth the bother to help. Mind you that is coming more from some media networks and of course conservative nutjobs.

72. There is your problem
"But I feel the country, as a whole, as the opinion that Haiti isn't worth the bother to help. Mind you that is coming more from some media networks and of course conservative nutjobs."

You are basing your opinion of the mindset of 300 million people based on some media reports.

75. My roommate had it on this morning, and it's on here at work.
Not all I base my op on. Coverage has been insufficient by the major networks. And I'm sorry, but too many peole here have the Huffington Post mentality. Tits and movies stars, a little bit of reality, and then onto bashing the poor for drinking soda.

Haiti disaster coverage on them. The only network you've mention having watched is Fox. Why?

Is analysis lacking of why things are the way they are in Haiti? Yes.

Is anybody else in the world, in the media I have scanned talked about globalization and Haiti? NO

So who else do you want to excoriate for not doing analysis? CBC? Diario Reforma? El Universal?

92. Front pages of newspapers show lots. Too bad you had to bash in OP subject line
I don't watch tv news so can't comment on them. Here is a link to "todays front pages" website that shows lots of coverage:
http://www.newseum.org/TodaysFrontPages/

I unrecced because you did a broad bashing of Duers in your subject line. If you'd have stuck with "coverage isn't as good as I expected", I'd have rec'd
