CNN covering an 11 year old girl pinned beneath cement. They can't move the cement
because they don't have the equipment, and they are worried about amputating her leg bc of the loss of blood and lack of ability to stabilize her.

Some pretty gut wrenching footage. They pulled a piece of a dead body out from near her awhile ago.

Being that helpless has to be hell on earth.

5. I can't even imagine. She's asking for water and keeps looking back at the people
trying to free her. Terribly sad.

4. A Chinook could lift that cement.
Don't know if it is in one piece though.

6. Looks like there are multiple layers or slabs on top of the slab pinning her down.

7. I missed it, but what I did see was mind blowing as well:
Sanjay Gupta dressing a head wound (big cut and possible skull fracture) of a 15 day old baby.

12. They're now showing footage of a man rescued from beneath 5 floors of a collapsed school.
Amid the chaos there are some bright spots.

11. If it is a replay of yesterday she got out with only a broken leg
in fact she looked great when she got out.

14. I saw that one. This is unfortunately different. It's live right now, and they keep going back,
but they haven't for the mast ten or fifteen mins, so they may be having to amputate her leg.

13. There may be thousands of people pinned like this
Concrete weighs around 150 pounds per cubic foot. Even a fairly small piece is too heavy to be moved by hand.

It has to be broken up with chisels and hammers.

Or you need air compressors, jackhammers, cranes, buldozers and other construction equipment.

I'd expect that there is very little of this equipment in Haiti, and I've not heard of any urgent shipments of this type of equipment.

So if people can be freed by having their limbs amputated, this is what needs to be done. All the rest will die.

15. Yes. Better alive without a limb than dead, but they're afraid to amputate bc they don't have
adequate blood supplies for the victims after amputations.

17. I saw the one earlier with the 13 year old who was thankfully pulled out.
They managed to do it with an ax and shovel. The people on the scene were scared the whole building would collapse if they didn't do it right.

19. Fair enough for the deleted subhead.
This is indeed a terrible tragedy.
I just hope that equally as moronic thread is deleted or locked as well.

20. Shortly after 6pm the rescuers found a small generator to aid in cutting the girl free!
Edited on Thu Jan-14-10 09:08 PM by Parker CA
They're now looking for medical attention for the girl, but she was rescued and was the only one out of 31 in the building to survive.

Some good news amidst all the tragedy.
