MIAMI -- Nearly a dozen people injured in the earthquake in Haiti were flown to South Florida on Wednesday night after suffering from their injuries for more than a day.
Of the 11 patients who arrived at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, eight are Americans. One of the injured is a child. Many of those who were injured appeared too hurt to walk. They were put into an ambulance and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Hospital officials said Thursday morning that three of the patients were in good condition, three were in fair, four were in critical and one was released. One of the patients in critical condition had a limb amputated, Local 10's Constance Jones reported.
Doctors said that the fact that several of the patients have been injured for nearly 48 hours complicated their efforts to treat them.
Jackson Memorial Hospital is coordinating with other hospitals in the area to prepare for more patients expected to arrive Thursday. County, state and federal officials also are meeting to prepare for the hundreds more expected to be flown to the U.S.
