8. First, she's never made ANY effective decision
She has absolutely NO "grace under fire". She became a "person of influence" by faking her way to the governorship of Alaska. Let me tell you about these seminars: Does any one really think they can afford to pay these people tens of thousands in speaking fees by charging "$19 for your whole office"? Our office went to one where the fee was $100 for the whole office. During the break, the "MC" or another salesman pitches overpriced computer software that "guarantees" you will be able to make a ton of money on the stock market. By seeing when the "big boys" buy and sell (insider trading is mentioned and accepted as normal during the presentation) you are told that you can make a fortune. The price of the software? $6,000. If you have an arena that seats 20,000, and it is 3/4 full (they rarely sell out)that's 15,000 people. If 1% buy this product, that's 150 x 6,000 = $900,000. AT EACH VENUE! They could give a shit whether anyone gets "motivated" by listening to them. I came away with very little in the way of motivation, but several people in my office actually considered buying one of the products.

23. Rachel interviewed that woman a couple of months ago,
after the Smirk became one of the "featured speakers" at the event in Dallas! She's the wife of the founder of the whole shebang...quite the snake oil salesperson herself.

27. The only good motivational tape was the first edition of Abilene Paradox
If you can imagine Jeff Foxworthy as a COMPETENT motivational speaker, you get the idea as to the tone of this video. (Google "abilene paradox' to see what it's about.) The current edition has skits with actors and shit, but the first edition was just Jerry Harvey up on stage giving a very long speech.

Best part: when his father-in-law told the next-door neighbor Dr. Harvey digs ditches for a living.

"Dad, you know what I do for a living. Why'd you tell him that?"
'Because if I told him all you do is talk for a livin', he'd think my daughter married a bum.'

But yeah, this is what happens: people with a talent for science go into science. People with a talent for production, into production. Those with talents for art go into art. But those with no talents whatsoever become motivational speakers, and speak to the people with the talents until the talents disappear thanks to their motivational speaking.

22. Achievement, huh?
Like how to achieve leaving work at noon, taking a super-long bubble bath (because you've worked so hard in the morning yelling at staff and threatening your soon-to-be-ex-brother-in-law), and then ordering your teenage daughter and said daughter's teenage self-proclaimed "redneck" boyfriend to hightail it over to Taco Bell to get you a Crunchwrap Supreme for dinner?

(The "go back and quit your job" is hilarious, btw!)

25. The Rick Belluzzo intro is the best one...
According to Zig Ziglar: Rick Belluzzo as the former President and COO for Microsoft produced STAGGERING profits for his company. Let Rick teach YOU how to use his key management and business strategies to deliver AMAZING results for your organization even through the toughest markets!

According to reality:
At HP, Belluzzo was responsible for killing the HP9000 mini.
At SGI, he was responsible for SGI's failed Windows NT transition. Fucking with Irix and the MIPS processors essentially ruined SGI. Now it's a Linux shop.
After he killed two of the three leading 64-bit platforms of the era Microsoft hired him and stuck him in the MSN division for a while. He wasn't COO there for long.

I dunno...this tour features one of the major players in launching an illegal war, the first governor of Alaska ever to resign without being under formal charges, the guy who nuked the HP9000, a football coach who has had coaching jobs at six universities and was fired from most of them, a woman whose claim to fame is writing a book on sales, and America's Worst Mayor.

HOW much did you say they were paying people to go to this?

26. Excellent summary (all: must read from jmowreader!)
I wondered who Ms. Ringlets was, but I didn't want to go to the link.

Generally, these are advertised as "$99! But FREE TODAY!" and then it's a non-stop push to buy crap. I know some people who've fallen for it...I tried not to roll my eyes (think America's Worst Mayor, a.k.a. Noun-Verb-911 was in that one too).
