Now that people are there, the "experts" will be popping up telling everybody else why they're doing it wrong. Someone will have a better idea for air traffic control, or port reconstruction or airlifting, or evacuations, or triage protocols. Finance people will be telling everyone else the best way to use the money, to spend it, to conserve it, to invest it.

Most of this will be bullshit.

A good deal of it will come from American conservatives.

None of it will be helpful.

All of it would be best left unheeded and disbelieved.

1. Actually you are wrong
for the people on the ground, it is a fact the US controls the Airport.

And given the number of logistics officers coming in from the four corners, I am betting that somebody is taking out a map and dividing it into sectors. This will and is being run, as a strict military operation. And some folks may hate to hear this, but the military with the C3I capacity right now is US... so we take default command.

Now if you are talking of American conservatives or people even here on DU... it started from word go.

:-)

But been to a few of these shidigs, and trust me, the rescue workers, you may not believe it, but point them in a direction and they will pretty much do their job, PERIOD... yes, there will be a few... shall we say, incidents, but nothing that a little tough love from commanders on the ground will not fix and that you most likely will never hear. Hell at times you see strange bed fellows working the same scene... and gosh darn it, starting friendships.

9. Not criticising anyone on the ground there ... I am premptively calling out the various asshats ....
.... around the world, but mostly in the US, who will be taking shit, yet not a one of them there on the scene.

3. Stinky I think many do not understand the 4 disciplines of
Emergency Management

1. Mitigation
2. Response
3. Recovery
4. Preparedness

In this case Haiti is too poor to spend resources on planning for the mitigation of a disaster.

So now because of the crisis the rescuers have jumped into the "Response" phase. Creating a fluid and coordinated effort with all of the responding countries and resources is going to be difficult.

Many and close to all of the hospitals were destroyed
Water supply destroyed
Electrical supply destroyed
Telecommunications destroyed

Rescue is still going on
Supplies are not getting out due to logistics and coordination
U.S. Helicopters are enroute and may just be arriving
Heavy equipment is enroute
Huge need for security
82nd airborne is enroute

My thoughts go to the safety of all of the rescuers and responders. I hope they can find many survivors and tend to all of the injured.

5. You should repost that as an original thread. My knowledge of disaster response
is cursory and even I've been trying to quell rumors and educate people.

I would very enthusiastically recommend and kick it if you posted that as a thread.

10. Actually, I do understand that. My targets in ths post are the various "experts" who are .........
..... nowhere near Haiti but still will be telling everyone else how it ought to be done. These asshats are mostly US based conservatives.

7. You could be more discriminating. This is disaster capitalism
happening right in front of your eyes. Don't believe anyone. Watch.
