So I'm watching my nightly Olbermann and watching these American sailors and airmen hauling supplies into a stricken nation. And I'm listening to this doctor on the phone - he and his colleagues from the University of Miami dropped everything and basically established a medical beachhead at the airport in Port-au-Prince. Americans. Working round the clock to save the lives of complete strangers with no expectations and nothing in the world to gain.
And it occurs to me.
Is there any better way to combat terrorism? All the predator drones in the American arsenal could not possibly, for even one moment, hope to achieve what these men and women are doing tonight in that unhappy land. One humane gesture at a time, they are rebuilding a shattered people and at the same time they are ensuring that there is one place on Earth where Americans will not be looked on as the enemy.
We do not need more earthquakes. Please don't get me wrong. But what we need is for this government to not miss an opportunity, whether it's in the wake of a natural disaster or in the midst of negotiations on climate control, to demonstrate that we are fellow citizens of this world and that we wish to be counted as the friends of our neighbors, both in this hemisphere and beyond.
That's it. Night all.
