California recently did this, and the people who work there or drink there are happy.

Second-hand smoke is a Class A carcinogen.

52. Tennessee is quite beautiful.
I remember when cities in California were going through the controversy of banning smokers from restaurants and bars, we heard the same arguments and yet, the bars and restaurants are still open and thriving, a lot of owners came to realize that it was cheaper to run bars without expensive ventilation equipment and labor to clean off cigarette smoke goo.

6. In NYC, first they insisted a little teeny bit be set aside for non-smokers.
So many people asked for non-smoking tables that eventually the non-smoking section was most of the restaurant/bar, and the smoking section was the little teeny bit.

So many people weren't going out because of the smoke, it gave them a chance to breathe in public again.

Selfish smokers, of course, never gave them a thought for decades and still don't.

That's what cracks me up the most about smokers - Now that smoking is being banned, all the sudden, all smokers claimed to be considerate.

I recently had the dis-pleasure of eating in the "non-smoking" section of a Michigan bar/restaurant. The pigs sitting across the isle smoked like fucking chimneys every second EXCEPT when their food arrived. They set their butts down a few minutes while they shoveled food down their throats only to light up as soon as it was convenient to themselves. Pigs like that don't want to ruin THEIR meal with their own smoke so why should they be able to ruin MY meal with their foul stench?

57. Those smokers were being considerate.
They were sitting in the smoking section of the restaurant that was provided for them by the owners of the establishment. Your beef is not with the smokers but with the owners. They are allowed to ruin your meal because the law and the owners sanction it.

fat Republican politicians to make deals. Everyone else should be home smoking and watching TV so they can get a whole new load of commercial brainwashing to keep them docile. I mean, the idea that working class people go out, have a few beers, play a few games of pool or darts and maybe watch a football game with their peers is disgusting. They should be spending that money keeping Wall Street solvent.

11. Yes and no. I think there should be smoking bars and non-smoking bars.
They're restricting outdoor areas where people can smoke. Let them have a place to drink, visit with friends and relax -- among fellow smokers. And let the non-smokers have the same type of place where they won't be bothered by the smoke. Why does it have to be either/or?

14. I agree, and no one loathes obnoxious cig smoke more than me. But no one is forcing me to go into
a bar where smoking is allowed. Just as no one is forcing a smoker to go into a bar where smoking is banned.

But that reasonable shoe never seems to get on the other foot: smoking is so de classe to a certain brand of phony "progressive" that the issue boils down to one of simple contempt for people who like to pollute their bodies with cigarette smoke, all the while the very same phonies are reaching for an Eclair....

116. Agreed.
In GA, where I live, the individual establishment can decide whether or not to allow smoking. If they do choose to allow it, no one under 18 can work there or go inside. There's a place for everyone, smokers & non-smokers alike. That seems fair to me.

Freedom of choice, people! This is America!

12. I can't stand smoke...
...but I strongly object to banning smoking in bars. I would never, ever go to such a place, but I find it extremely objectionable on the grounds of individual liberty and freedom of association to not let people kill themselves in whatever way they see fit. If we are going to ban smoking, you better damn well ban McDonald's -- which is at least as objectionable -- or we are nothing but self-serving hypocrites.

I can't stand cigarette smoke, but I can't stand whiny hypocrites at least as much. No one is forcing me to go to such places, and I don't. The "second-hand smoke" is pretty low on the list of environmental hazards in most locales.

49. Or Michigan. Where I stayed at my brother's house for the holidays.
Oh the horror the horror of not being able to smoke in his nonsmoking house.

Sure it was damn cold, but I got my quick fix and went back inside to enjoy the company of friends and family.

If bars in Cleveland are worried about losing business, maybe they can make some outdoor accommodations like San Francisco did. Some bars put up awnings to protect smokers from rain, some others opened up back patios with heat lamps that previously had accumulated junk. One place I read about, converted an old bus into a smoking lounge and parked it out front of the bar.

Y'all will get used to it and perhaps you'll even make new friends with members of the vast majority of nonsmokers who might now venture into their neighborhood bar.

70. ...or, maybe, it should be the bar owners' decision...
There are restaurants in my neighborhood that have always been non-smoking...and they did well. If there's a market for a non-smoking facility, owners will accommodate.

Non-smokers have no more right to demand that bars and restaurants be smoke-free than smokers have to demand that owners accommodate them by allowing them to smoke.

72. Nonsmoking bans in San Francisco originated out of concern for workers
not patrons. It was a matter of regulating a toxic work environment. Bar owners who actually own the building in which the bar resides are exempt. In a sense, it is considered their own house. And I know several bartenders and wait staff who smoke and who are happy with the ban. Especially the older ones. The constant smoky atmosphere started to take a toll on their health.

78. It's an occupational hazard.

There's no law that guarantees a worker the right to both choose their workplace AND alter the normal business practices to accommodate them (at least, there shouldn't be).

Concerned about loud noise damaging your hearing? Don't be a roadie for a rock band.

Don't like smoke? Don't work in a bar or restaurant that allows smoking.

Construction worker's are NEVER required to wear hardhats. Restaurant workers are never required to wash hands. Any damn fool is allowed to operate heavy machinery without qualifications. Chemical workers always exose bare skin. And hospitals? My god it's a toxic free for all with no regulation to protect the employees! Hell, OSHA really doesn't do anything since there are no safety requirements for any jobs.

But, most places have a dining area outside.

I met a friend for lunch at a place that sits on Tampa Bay. We both smoked, so we were seated on the deck over the bay.

We still allow smoking in over 21 clubs.

People go eat and leave, instead of lingering to drink in the restaurants. They go to over 21 clubs or home.

It's been that way since before the recession.

NC will suffer, now, too.

40. I'm a non-smoker, apparently you are not?
It doesn't matter.

All you really have to do is go outdoors to smoke your cigarette, and other smokers will join you. If you're popular, or if they need air, non-smoking friends will follow you outdoors while you smoke.

I am a non-smoker, and I am so grateful that my clothes don't stink anymore after coming home from a bar or a nightclub.

103. I am a nonsmoker now
but I smoked for years. I don't find it progressive that whether your clothes smell good or not to you is the criteria you are stating for denying others their ability to sit with friends and smoke. I am all for separate establishments and even though I am now a nonsmoker, I would hang out at the smoking bar because I found over the years that I prefer the company of smokers to nonsmokers and the reasons why are more apparent after I quit.

To all the non-smokers: The bars you won't go to because they are smokey, don't want you there. That is why they smoke even thou you don't like it.

That is, it is impossible to have a nonsmoking bar when even one person smoking in it. The majority may want to have a nonsmoking bar but once one person lights up, there is no other option.

Bosnia/Herzegovina, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Estonia, Finland, France, several German states, Greece, Guernsey, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, The Netherlands (where you can smoke weed but not tobacco in designated cafes), Norway, Sweden, Turkey (!), England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales have all instituted some form of smoking ban that affects bars and restaurants, though some establishments have the option of providing completely enclosed, ventilated, lower-pressure rooms for smokers, where normally no service can be provided.

The world is a-changing.

I've got enough Christo-Republicans trying to cram their morality down my throat...and I have nothing but contempt for the Democrats that do the exact same thing with their anti-smoking crusade.

Don't try to tell me that it's a "health issue." The whole idea of going to a bar is to enjoy something that is bad for your health.

I can appreciate that there ought to be SOME non-smoking bars, maybe even a majority of them. There ought to be enough demand for it that some barkeeps might decide to make their club a non-smoking establishment, to bring in the majority of the population. But if smokers want to get together, and have a place by and for smokers, and maybe serve some beer there, or have a band play, quit whining that you want to go there, but the smoke bothers you.

I really don't know why this is still such an issue. Here in Philadelphia, bars that make a certain percentage of their money in food sales were required to go smoke-free. I'm fine with that because I don't smoke around people when they are eating. The bars that were eligible to allow smoking (bars the serve little or no food) could decide whether or not they wanted to. Most of the bars in the area where I live decided to ban smoking even if they were eligible to allow it. A few chose to allow smoking. I'm a smoker and I enjoy my smoking bars. The non-smokers have lots and lots of places where they can go and not be exposed to cigarette smoke. As far as I can tell, the folks here in Philly are fine with this arrangement.

66. Oregon - Already Bans Smoking in bars
But it is still legal in casinos in Oregon because they are owned by native american tribes.

I've asked one casino to ban it also. They currently ban all smoking in their hotel, the restaurants inside the casino and last week I saw No Smoking signs up in the Players Club area. I'll bet the entire casino goes no smoking sometime in the next year.

Second hand smoke gives me one hell of a headache, and I expect my Texas Hold'm playing will improve in a smoke free environment. There is a No Smoking casino at Lake Tahoe and it's nice to play cards there.

126. It already is up here
Bar owners noted a dropoff in business for a whole two days, then it was back to business as usual.

But, honestly, the ability to go to the bar and not come home smelling like smoke is awesome. Plus, I found out that the bar has a ceiling.

146. Yes.
I'm sorry but, if I'm at a bar, I'm in there to enjoy sexy music and sexy people. Not your rancid tobacco breath. Take that shit outside.
