A man trying to escape the Lake County Courthouse yesterday during a court hearing tried to throw himself through a window of a second-story walkway but bounced off the bulletproof glass and was immediately surrounded by court officers.
A surveillance video shows the man -- identified as 19-year-old Travis Copeland of Zion -- running north through the skyway that connects the Lake County Jail to the county administration building. The man runs under the camera out of view, then back part of the way down the corridor.
He paused for a moment, poised on one foot, then lunges at at the window with his shoulder and head. But instead of busting through the glass, the man bounces harmlessly. He appears stunned.
As sheriff's deputies appear at both ends of the hall, the lies down on his stomach. One deputy applies handcuffs while another trains a gun on the man. He is quickly escorted away.
